This attack was part of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indian_Ocean_Raid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indian Ocean Raid<\/a>, and was followed a few days later by a\nsimilar attack on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trincomalee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trincomalee<\/a>. The targets were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Kingdom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">British<\/a>&nbsp;warships, harbour installations, and air\nbases; the object was to disrupt the war effort of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commonwealth_of_Nations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">British Empire \/\nCommonwealth<\/a>&nbsp;nations and\nforce the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Eastern_Fleet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">British Eastern Fleet<\/a>&nbsp;to leave&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Asian<\/a>&nbsp;waters.&nbsp; ( Wikipedia &#8211; Easter\nSunday Raid &#8211;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Easter_Sunday_Raid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Easter_Sunday_Raid<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When\nSingapore fell to the Japanese in February 1942, British occupied Ceylon (later\nSri Lanka) became a central base for British operations in Southeast Asia, and\nthe port at Trincomalee regained its historically strategic importance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because\nCeylon was an indispensable strategic bastion for the British Royal Navy, it\nbecame an irresistible military target for the Japanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nJapanese in their bombing raids over Ceylon in April 1942 targeted only British\nmilitary bases in Colombo and Trincomalee, and not civilian locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nJapanese also bombed the mental asylum at Angoda, mistaking it for the fuel\ntanks at nearby&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kolonnawa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kolonnawa<\/a>.&nbsp; There was no Red Cross painted on\nthe Roof of the Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\nwas what is now called co &#8211; lateral damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This\nstands in contrast to the conduct of the&nbsp;the Allies who\ndeliberately&nbsp;targeted innocent&nbsp;civilians in the Anglo &#8211; American raid\nover Dresden, Germany in February 1945, and the Americans who mercilessly\nbombed innocent men, women and children using Nuclear Bombs over Hiroshima and\nNagasaki, Japan in August 1945.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Janaka Perera<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Janaka Perera Dilrook has said that&nbsp;&#8216; Japan was the only country that bombed Sri Lanka&#8221; Here is my reply: The&nbsp;Easter Sunday Raid&nbsp;(or&nbsp;Battle of Ceylon) was an air attack by&nbsp;carrier-based aircraft of the&nbsp;Imperial Japanese Navy&nbsp;against&nbsp;Colombo,&nbsp;Ceylon&nbsp;(now&nbsp;Sri Lanka), on&nbsp;Easter Sunday, 5 April 1942, during the&nbsp;South-East Asian theatre&nbsp;of&nbsp;World War II.
