{"id":91229,"date":"2019-07-10T22:52:22","date_gmt":"2019-07-11T04:52:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=91229"},"modified":"2019-07-10T13:06:13","modified_gmt":"2019-07-10T20:06:13","slug":"philip-gunawardene-swrd-wimala-wijewardene-ranil-ruwan-and-lake-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2019\/07\/10\/philip-gunawardene-swrd-wimala-wijewardene-ranil-ruwan-and-lake-house\/","title":{"rendered":"PHILIP GUNAWARDENE, SWRD,  WIMALA WIJEWARDENE, RANIL, RUWAN AND LAKE HOUSE"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong>By M D P DISSANAYAKE<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>During\ngeneral elections for 4 Parliament on 19 March 1960, the leader of MEP&nbsp;\nPhillip Gunawardene said: &#8221;&nbsp; <strong>If minorities or majorities of Sri\nLanka unwilling to commit to our Constitution and Laws, they can leave Ceylon,\nwe will meet the cost of air passage and chop their passports as &#8221; NOT\nALLOWED TO RETURN TO SRI LANKA&#8221;, <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Had\nPhilip won the Election, today Sri Lanka would have been amongst the top\nnations in Asia as he did provide the ground work for Paddy Lands Act, Peoples\nBank&nbsp;&nbsp; Bus and Port nationalisation, established CWEs. etc. within a\nshort period of time with Mr S W R D Bandanaike.&nbsp; Philip&#8217;s impatience over\ntook him, he left \/ sacked from government, the enemies of Sri Lanka\nBuddharakkita Thero, Dicky Soysa, Ossie Corea, Wimala Wijewardene took control\nof the government after Philip left&nbsp; 1959 and SWRD was assassinated just\nfew months afterwards. Philip protected SWRD whilst in government, but SWRD\ncould not bear the heat of the contractors, Lake House, corrupt buddhist monks\nand untrustworthy Ministers like Wimala Wijewardene in his government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During\nMarch 1960 elections, Philip attracted massive crowds and there were high hopes\nthat Philip will become first ever true Sinhala Leader.&nbsp; But MEP secured\nonly 10 seats, &nbsp;Dr N M Perera&#8217;s LSSP also got 10 seats ( who ran on\ndivisive policies for equal rights for Tamils. )<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Left\nparties garnered 932,000 votes winning 27 seats, whereas UNP won 50 seats&nbsp;\nwith 907,000 votes.&nbsp;&nbsp; SLFP alone &nbsp;won 46 seats with 647,000\nvotes under first past post system.&nbsp; Noteworthy SLFP Leader was C P de\nSilva from Minneriya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LSSP\nwas largely responsible for the current political divisiveness&nbsp; in Sri\nLanka.&nbsp; They provided unwanted support for minorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WIMALA\nWIJEWARDENE&nbsp; was a Minister in Bandaranaike government and was arrested as\na suspect. But later acquitted.
