A Sri Lankan parliamentary panel said it would investigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neither the company nor the Chinese embassy in Colombo has commented on Sirisena\u2019s allegations. China has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing in its multibillion-dollar infrastructure projects in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now China is looking at us differently. When Gotabaya Rajapaksa becomes the president \u2026 he will set the record right and restore the relationship to where it was,\u201d Rajapaksa\u2019s adviser Palitha Kohona told reporters in Colombo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/week-asia\/geopolitics\/article\/3009731\/next-hambantota-welcome-chinese-funded-us14-billion-port-city\">Next Hambantota? Welcome to the Chinese-funded US$1.4 billion Port City Colombo[3]<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I suppose the thinking was if we upset China, the West would come to us with endless bags of gold \u2026 But the bags of gold never materialised,\u201d Kohona said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ties between Colombo and Beijing soured when, upon his election in 2015, Sirisena suspended all Chinese investment projects, citing allegations of corruption, overpricing and flouting of government procedures. He allowed projects to resume the following year after demanding changes in some.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.i-scmp.com\/sites\/default\/files\/d8\/images\/methode\/2019\/09\/20\/c71874ea-db90-11e9-80eb-3aa57b6d2433_1320x770_185413.jpg\" alt=\"Sri Lanka will hold a presidential election on November 16. Photo: APRajapaksa\u2019s spokesman said on Friday that the opposition politician, whose candidature has yet to be confirmed, and his brother, former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, met this week with Chen Min\u2019er, a leader of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/chinas-communist-party\">Communist Party of China&nbsp;[4]<\/a>&nbsp;and a close ally of President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/xi-jinping\">Xi Jinping&nbsp;[5]<\/a>, to discuss future ties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said that at the meeting Chen pledged China\u2019s support for the Sri Lankan government\u2019s future endeavours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/week-asia\/geopolitics\/article\/3020308\/us-naval-base-rumours-sri-lanka-spark-alarm-washington-and\">Is Sri Lanka the next theatre for the US-China tussle?[6]<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rajapaksa is widely seen as the front runner in November\u2019s election due to his popularity among Sri Lanka\u2019s Sinhala Buddhist majority for his role in ending a 26-year civil war in 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, his candidature is yet to be confirmed, with uncertainties lingering over a legal battle related to misappropriation of funds and his renunciation of US citizenship.
