{"id":95360,"date":"2019-11-18T15:22:38","date_gmt":"2019-11-18T22:22:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=95360"},"modified":"2019-11-18T15:22:38","modified_gmt":"2019-11-18T22:22:38","slug":"lankan-parties-discuss-dissolution-of-parliament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2019\/11\/18\/lankan-parties-discuss-dissolution-of-parliament\/","title":{"rendered":"Lankan parties discuss dissolution of parliament"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy NewsIn.Asia<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Colombo, November 18 (AIR): As Gotabaya Rajapaksa was sworn in as Sri Lankan President on Monday, discussions on dissolving&nbsp;Parliament and holding fresh elections have begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newsin.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Gotabaya-Rajapaksa-being-sworin-in-750x375.jpg\" alt=\"Lankan parties discuss dissolution of parliament\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Leader of the opposition and Gotabaya\u2019s elder brother Mahinda Rajapaksa has said that with Gotabaya\u2019s victory&nbsp;in the Presidential election, it is best to hold a parliamentary election as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The former President said that work cannot commence as the President is from one party while the cabinet, including the Prime Minister, is from another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that the mandate of the people should be respected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sources in the Gotabaya\u2019s Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) said they are having discussions with United National Party (UNP) to reach a consensus on dissolving the House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As per the constitution, parliament cannot be dissolved till February next year unless the House passes a resolution to this effect with two-thirds majority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, a meeting of UNP parliamentary group under Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe failed to arrive at a decision on this issue in its meeting held today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were reports of heated exchanges between MPs loyal to him and to Sajith Premadasa, who lost the Presidential Election held on November 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier,&nbsp;President Gotabaya Rajapakasa said that he will follow a neutral foreign policy and stay out of any conflict with world powers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gotabaya was sworn in as seventh President of Sri Lanka at a ceremony in Anuradhapura this morning. Speaking after the ceremony,&nbsp;the new President said he knew that the response to his request to the Tamil and Muslim community to join in his victory was less than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as the new President, he had invited&nbsp;all to work together with him for the future prosperity of the country as true Sri Lankans.
