State Minister \nof Technology and Innovation, Thilanga Sumathipala sated that Scientific \nexpertise would be made use of, in Steering his Ministry towards transforming \n Sri Lanka in to a technology based developed nation.  He expressed these ideas \non the occasion of assumption of office at his Ministry yesterday (02) with the \nblessing of the Maha Sanga. The Minister further elaborated thus,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to attain economic \ndevelopment based on technology and innovation, we will have to invest in higher \neducation and advanced technologies, in place of cheap labour. Internationally \nrenowned Scholars  of our own have always laid emphasis on the need to invest in \ntechnology related fields so as to ensure future economic development. \nTherefore, we should not limit ourselves to the traditional exports such as \n tea, rubber and coconut, but embark on technologically competitive inventions \nutilizing intellectual labour.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minister \nexpressed his intention to work towards the creation of a technology based \nsociety, a prime objective of the government as envisaged in the policy \nStatement of H.E. the President, by creating the much needed platform, a task \nwhich would be performed by Ministry in the future. He also expressed his belief \nthat through  investment necessary for the creation of a developed country based \non technology the city of Colombo could be made the capital of Asia in the not \ntoo distance future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prof.  Sarath \nGunapala an internationally renowned Sri Lankan NASA employee, and Prof.Tissa \nVitharana, former Minister of Science and Technology took part in this event by \ndelivering special lectures and both expressed their wish to extend \nunconditional support for the future initiatives of the Ministry of Technology \nand innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Tissa \nVitharana said ,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Even though a number of Advanced \nTechnologies emerged globally in the recent past, we as a country didnot grasp \nthem properly. If we are to move from the middle income level, that we are \nplaced at present, to higher income level we definitely will have to grasp an \nadvanced technology. Technological products of high end Technologies are \nessential to compete in the highly competitive world market. By utilizing such \nTechnologies, we will be able to add more value to our raw materials. We will be \nable to overcome this challenge only by utilizing high end Technologies such as \nnanotechnology, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, Robotics, and \nMechatronics, while also improving our human resources\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor \nSarath Gunapala Said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Countries like Taiwan and South \nKorea have achieved Rapid economic development within a relatively short period \nof time, through their investment made in human resources, Science and \nTechnology sectors. This is a great opportunity for Sri Lanka too. If the future \nrole of Technology and innovation in properly navigated utilizing high end \nTechnologies through the intervention of the Ministry of Technology and \nInnovation, the economy of Sri Lanka could be elevated from its present status \nof being a developing economy to a developed economy\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event was \nattended by political represantatives, Mr. Anura Dissanayake, Secretary to the \nMinistry of Higher Education, Technology and Innovation, Mr. Chinthaka \nLokuhetti, former Secretary to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Research \nalong with ScientistS, Technologists, scholars, artistes and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
