{"id":96365,"date":"2019-12-13T22:24:20","date_gmt":"2019-12-14T04:24:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=96365"},"modified":"2019-12-13T15:23:04","modified_gmt":"2019-12-13T22:23:04","slug":"separatism-brewing-up-also-in-the-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2019\/12\/13\/separatism-brewing-up-also-in-the-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"Separatism brewing up also in the UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>UK News<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Prime Minister Boris Johnson has won the big fight over Brexit \u2013\nand that the constitutional battle over whether the UK leave is coming to an\nend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Conservatives (Tories) now have the majority they need to take the UK out of the EU next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>British Conservatives won 365 seats out of 650 seats collecting 43.6% share of\ntotal votes while main opposition Labour party won only 203 seats collecting\n32.1% share of votes giving overall majority of 45 seats for conservatives to\nform a stable government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"498\" height=\"595\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/UKResults2019.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-96366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/UKResults2019.jpg 498w, https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/UKResults2019-251x300.jpg 251w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/><figcaption>Blue -Conservative   Red- Labour  Yellow-SNP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though this is possible under Westminster type democracy,\nBut in Sri Lanka such voters split would not produce a stable government\nbecause of our proportional representation system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the\nconservatives had an absolute majority, another big clash is brewing up now over\nthe future of the UK itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like in Sri Lanka, majority English and minority Scottish people\nare poles apart now. Same way the Tamils won the North of Sri Lanka, <em>Scottish National Party (<\/em>SNP)<em> who advocates\nindependence won all the constituencies in Scotland except a few.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/scotlandResults-1024x800.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-96367\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The SNP&#8217;s landslide in\nScotland sets up a constitutional clash between Holyrood and Westminster. SNP\u2019s\nleader Nicola Sturgeon will use the SNP&#8217;s success to demand a section 30 order\nfrom Westminster &#8211; the ability to hold a legally binding referendum on\nindependence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boris\nJohnson is highly likely to refuse such a request, on the grounds that the last\nsection 30 order was granted by David Cameron on the understanding by all sides\nthat the first independence referendum would settle the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nSNP will say circumstances have changed. They will hope that if Westminster is\nseen to thwart what they claim is the current will of the people, that may\nincrease support for independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result in Scotland\nputs independence firmly back on the agenda and Nicola Sturgeon is getting\nready to formally request powers which would allow another referendum to\nhappen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SNP can now argue\nit has two mandates: the last Scottish election (where they said if Brexit\nhappened against Scotland\u2019s the Scottish Parliament will be allowed to call for\nanother vote) and this general election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in a call with the\nScottish first minister tonight, Boris Johnson has made it clear he will say\nno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It sets up a big\npolitical clash in the coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tories hope that\nby saying no they can get to the next Scottish election and deprive the SNP of\nmajority support for indyref2 \u2013 but the SNP think London saying no will only\nincrease support for their cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nicola Sturgeon says Boris Johnson has &#8220;no right&#8221; to\nstand in the way of another Scottish independence referendum after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/election-2019-50766014\">an &#8220;overwhelming&#8221; SNP\nelection victory<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scotland&#8217;s\nfirst minister said the result &#8220;renews, reinforces and strengthens&#8221;\nthe mandate for Indyref2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During\nthe campaign, the prime minister said he would reject any request to hold an\nindependence referendum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But\nMs Sturgeon said it was &#8220;the right of the people of Scotland&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added: &#8220;I\naccept, regretfully, that he has a mandate for Brexit in England &#8211; but he has\nno mandate whatsoever to take Scotland out of the EU.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nScottish government will next week publish a &#8220;detailed, democratic\ncase&#8221; for letting Holyrood decide on whether there should be a second\nindependence referendum, said Ms Sturgeon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However,\ninterim Scottish Conservative leader Jackson Carlaw said: &#8220;We are not\ngoing to support a request for a second independence referendum, and I don&#8217;t\nbelieve the prime minister will either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We\nare going to stand by the people who voted for us last night and the two\nmillion people who voted no in 2014.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UK News Prime Minister Boris Johnson has won the big fight over Brexit \u2013 and that the constitutional battle over whether the UK leave is coming to an end.
