{"id":96646,"date":"2019-12-19T15:09:27","date_gmt":"2019-12-19T22:09:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=96646"},"modified":"2019-12-19T15:09:27","modified_gmt":"2019-12-19T22:09:27","slug":"turning-back-to-china-sri-lanka-halts-american-million-dollar-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2019\/12\/19\/turning-back-to-china-sri-lanka-halts-american-million-dollar-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"Turning Back to China: Sri Lanka Halts American Million Dollar Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy Sputnik<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>New Delhi (Sputnik): The previous Ranil Wickremesinghe government in Sri Lanka had approved a $480 million development assistance grant from the United States, claiming that the program would benefit the island nation&#8217;s 11 million people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agreement, nevertheless, remained under intense scrutiny as opposition parties have been accusing the Wickremesinghe government of compromising the country&#8217;s sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new Gotabaya Rajapaksa government on Thursday ordered a review of the ambitious project through which America had planned to counter Chinese investment in the island nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sri Lankan minister Bandula Gunawardene, while briefing media about the cabinet&#8217;s decisions, said a four-member committee had been appointed to study the agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The government said it would not move the agreement to parliament until a four-member committee produces its report for the Cabinet of Ministers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The program evoked widespread resistance since the beginning as people believed that it compromises the sovereignty of the country. Nevertheless, the United States embassy in Colombo reiterated that &#8220;it will not own or lease any land under this development assistance grant&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;Sri Lanka will oversee and manage all grant-funded projects throughout the implementation of the five-year grant assistance agreement,&#8221; the US embassy in Colombo added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Before coming to power, Gotabaya Rajapaksa had said he would &#8220;restore relations&#8221; with China if he was elected. Former President Sirisena had suspended several Chinese investment projects which were signed before 2015 during<a href=\"https:\/\/sputniknews.com\/analysis\/201912111077544063-chinese-presence-in-andaman-sea-may-cause-unintended-submarine-encounters---naval-officer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;Mahinda Rajapaksa<\/a>&nbsp;tenure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this month, China and Sri Lanka agreed to speed up the implementation of major projects including the Colombo Port City project and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sputniknews.com\/analysis\/201911281077426961-fast-tracking-pending-joint-venture-projects-will-be-in-focus-during-sri-lanka-prezs-india-visit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hambantota Port venture<\/a>.
