Thilanga\nSumathipala, State Minister of Technology and Innovation said that SLIATE will\nbe converted to a degree awarding institution. He made these remarks at a\nspecial discussion held with the representatives of the association of academic\nstaff of SLIATE, focusing on the measures to be taken towards the development\nof the institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Further\nexpressing his views, the Minister said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SLIATE\ncan be compared to a flower which has bloomed in the jungle. It is my view that\ndespite having the capacity to add more value to the economy, proper usage is\nnot being derived from SLIATE. Therefore, I hope to take action to develop this\ninstitution converting it to a degree awarding institution. Our children hold\ndifferent insights and outlooks. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the\nnumber of subjects being taught in the 19 institutions established islandwide,\nfrom 60 to 80, to suit their needs. We are committed to provide all physical\nresources needed to acquire this status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This\ninstitution could be upgraded through closer links established with University\nGrants Commission, State Universities and Non-government Universities which are\nauthorized to award degrees. We will take maximum efforts to initiate this task\nstarting with several subjects which could easily lead up to degree status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nscope of subjects being taught at this institution should be updated leaning\nmore towards the technological sector. For this, the research institutions\nfunctioning under our ministry could collaborate in providing opportunities for\nthe students to engage in new research. This makes it easy to add more value to\nthe institution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As\nan initial step towards fulfilling this task, a strategic plan will be devised\nfocusing on policy concerns, convening all stakeholders, within the next two\nweeks\u2019 time. In line with this strategic plan, the enrollment of students to\nthe institutions will be carried out according to a new methodology. This is\nthe long-awaited chance to upgrade SLIATE. Under the presidency of His\nExcellency Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who is concerned with and focused  on the\nneed to empower the future generation with technology for economic development,\nthis task has become easily attainable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upgrading\nSLIATE to the level of a degree awarding institution would reduce our country’s\nmoney flowing into foreign lands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\nfurther emphasized that it would be converted to a higher technological education\ninstitution awarding degrees to future intakes of students similar to\nUniversity of Technology ensuring no disruption being caused to those who\npursue studies in the institution. At this discussion the representatives of\nthe association of the Academic Staff presented the issues and inconveniences\nthat they encounter on a professional basis, and the Minister pledged  his\nsupport to resolve the issues along with the development of this institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr.\nChinthka Lokuhetti, Secretary to the Ministry, Prof. Janitha Liyanage, Dr.\nArosha Fernando and a group of officials of SLIATE joined in the discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
