Letter to the EditorAsoka Weerasinghe Gloucester . Ontario CanadaDecember 6, 2008
Mr. Jim Creskey
Sir:
In my Canadian You scratch my back and Ill scratch yours world, the stunning and shameless power grab political events in Ottawa last week shook me to the very core of my interest in Canadian politics.
While the Liberals and NDP are trying to down play the third player in their Coalition Troika, the Bloc Quebecois, their leader Gilles Duceppe is no fool. As he would have certainly asked, What is in it for me? So the question at play is, What did the Liberals and NDP promise the separatists in return for their support to bring down the Conservative government.
What is unnerving about this event is one actor, Bob Rae, the Liberal leadership contender who has taken the lead to travel the country to convince the Canadians, that the Coalition with the separatists is the best for Canada in these times of fiscal uncertainty around the world.
This is the same Canadian representing the Canadian Forum of Federations who visited Sri Lanka several times to preach the virtues of Canadian federalism as the best solution for the Sri Lankan political ills. Sri Lanka has been fighting the separatist-Tamils for the past 25 years.
If he had made some in-roads with his Sri Lankan mission for them to adopt the Canadian type of federalism, Sri Lanka will now have to take all what he preached with a pinch of salt, or dismiss his thesis of shameless power grab federalism with a separatist coalition without even batting an eyelid.
Bob Rae has done himself in in Sri Lanka as a credible democrat and federalist with his agrressive vengence-will-be-mine politics against the Conservative leader, Stephen Harper, whom he despises so much.
