- Army and former rebel group PLOTE clash at Chavakachcheri
A PLOTE member was killed and two soldiers critically injured in a clash between the army some
PLOTE members at Chavakachcheri in the North on Tuesday evening, security sources said.
The fighting had erupted following an argument some PLOTE cadres had with soldiers on security
surveillance opposite the PLOTE office at Chavakachcheri resulting in a PLOTE member opening
fire at the troops.
Several former rebel groups, including PLOTE and TELO, assist the military in its
campaign against the LTTE, which has been fighting for a separate homeland in
Sri Lanka's north and east since 1983.
A person described as a member of the EPDP who had been walking along the road was also
killed, these sources said.
Later the army launched a search operation another PLOTE member had lobbed a hand grenade at
troops. Then the army opened fire killing him on the spot. Army and the police had jointly carried
out investigations into the incident and had taken a PLOTE member into custody for questioning.
When contacted by 'The Island' PLOTE activist at their office declined to comment. 'There are no
senior members present now to comment on the incident', he said. Senior PLOTE members are
assisting the police and the army in the investigations, it's understood.
A statement from the international human rights group said it had reliable
information that the People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE)
and the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO) were running more than 20
detention camps in the north and east of Sri Lanka.
The appeal came after recent reports of a spectacular escape of a prisoner who
had been held in the custody of members of PLOTE in the northern town of
Vavuniya since June 13.

- Democracy - Sri Lankan Style
So often today we see mostly dysfunctional expressions of the principles of both
hierarchy and democracy. Most hierarchies express arrogance and abuse of power, repressing
expressions of new creative impulses. The abuse of power by the leader or leadership group
or Judiciary becomes the limitation of an entire organisation or society. Dysfunctional
hierarchies create immense frustration in others, accompanied by threats of rebellion or
at least passive resistance and subtle sabotage in the country. This has been clearly
demonstrated in Sri Lanka recently. High Court Judge Mahanama Tillekeratne, his son
Padmika Tillekeratne and two others are to be produced before the Kesbewa Magistrate this
week for a non-summary inquiry on charges under section 330 and 141 of the Penal Code. If
the principles of democracy are strictly adhered to, there shouldn't be a need for the
protest demonstration by lawyers of the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court. Instead, lawyers
should have been demonstrating their skill of the law inside the Chief Magistrate's Court,
not outside on the street. Judiciary of the country and the politics should not be
assimilated into each other. This may not only destroy democratic and social hierarchy but
also the entire democratic fabric of the Sri Lankan society.(Sri Lanka

Muralitharan presented his former cricket coach Sunil Fernando with a cheque for Rs.
50,000 ($US 750) at a civic reception here the other day.The gathering was held in
honour of the player who single-handedly destroyed England in a one-off Test match at The
Oval last Monday. The assemblage was specially held at Muralitharan's hometown in Kandy.
Muralitharan paid tribute to Fernando who first encouraged him to switch from fast
bowling to spin. He also made a donation to his old school, St Anthony's College, towards
their cricket development funds.
A news report on Wednesday has already confirmed that the Sri Lankan will take Wasim

A well fortified LTTE bunker was destroyed by troops at Kunchikkulam southwest of

recovered 10 anti-personnel mines on the same day during search operations east of
Ampakamam. In a separate incident on Friday, troops engaged a large group of terrorists in
combat ahead of the defence lines using mortars, causing heavy casualties. The LTTE
terrorists had fled with their dead and the injured. Meanwhile 60 displaced persons from

- Policy sell-out for few coppers
The Sri Lankan opposition leader Mr. Wickremesinghe's recent initiative to call an
all-party conference to discuss the ethnic crisis was unceremoniously misfired after the
proposal being severely criticised by the Tamil parties. Now Mr.Wickremasinghe' next
attempt is to propose a so called "unconditional negotiation with the LTTE" and
says that it should take place in a foreign country while the government is carrying out
military operations in the north and east. All these hasty policy reviews had been taken
allegedly in preparation of Mr. Wickremesinghe's visit to USA on fund raising mission to
collect party contributions. He is expected to be discussing some of his latest proposals
with some Sri Lankan expatriates including few specially arranged meetings with prominent
LTTE activists there. Early indications are there to suggest a headlong policy sell out
from the party leader in exchange of few hundred dollars from the LTTE funds in USA. (Sri
