Caritas Calls for Urgent International Mediation in Sri Lanka

Vatican City -As violence in Sri Lanka escalates, Caritas Internationalis, through its local member Caritas Sri Lanka-SEDEC, has called upon the international community to take a mediation role between the rebel forces and the Sri Lankan government as a matter of urgency.

"Recently we buried two Caritas workers who died in a mine explosion in the north of the country - just two of the mounting toll of deaths from the recent upsurge in violence," said CI Secretary General Duncan MacLaren from the organisation's secretariat in Vatican City. "Despite the killings, both sides must realise that violence only begets violence and a negotiated political settlement is the only solution. We encourage the international community to mediate between the parties and to urge them to sit around the negotiating table without prior conditions."

Mr MacLaren pointed out that any conflict or the outbreak of all-out war would vastly hinder the efforts still being made to rehabilitate communities affected by the tsunami of 26 December 2004.

"Already schools are reporting a fall in the number of pupils attending because of the conflict," he said. "In the Trincomalee district, a further 2,000 people have been displaced and Caritas is active in assisting the people in camps with food and other non-food items. Because of security reasons, our access to tsunami-affected areas is being increasingly made more difficult."

He continued, "A second 'tsunami' of outright war will destroy the few gains the victims of nature's tsunami have had and in the end will result in further misery and impoverishment for all parties. Just as the tsunami did not distinguish between Singhalese and Tamil, Christian, Buddhist, Moslem or Hindu, so war in the end does the same. It is vital that the international community does everything in its power to prevent a return to all-out war."

Caritas Internationalis will hold a major international "Caritas Peace Forum" looking at its peace-building and reconciliation work worldwide from 26-28 June 2006 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Caritas Internationalis is a confederation of 162 Catholic relief, development, and social service organisations present in 200 countries and territories.

The complete article in the website is quoted above as it appeared, for the convenience of readers.

Two obvious errors have been made in this article which needs comment. In the first paragraph it states
:"………………… has called upon the international community to take a mediation role between the rebel forces and the Sri Lankan government as a matter of urgency"

Firstly, Caritas seems to be unaware that what they call "rebel forces" is not rebel but "terrorist" as is listed worldwide and a banned in most countries as a "terrorist organisation." Secondly, they also seem to be unaware that for nearly 30 years Sri Lanka has already been having "international mediation" between the terrorists and the GOSL! Foreign INGOs, NGOs, Co-Chairs, SLMM, western countries, UN organisations have all been mediating and pampering the terrorists and fighting for their cause-not the cause of the democratically elected GOSL or the peace-loving citizens of this country. It is this mediation that has proved detrimental to The State and the people of this country!

It is no secret now, that the LTTE terrorist movement in Sri Lanka is a Catholic/Christian backed movement which has been using the LTTE as a cat's paw to achieve their anti-Buddhist, anti-Hindu agendas of creating racial and religious fragmentation of this country of ours. Every LTTE function has been patronized by Catholic/Christian Clergy and there is ample evidence of it. In the total of 30 years of the LTTE war against the government and the citizens of this country, can we remember any LTTE attacks on Christian Churches? None. However, we have witnessed LTTE attacks on Buddhist, Hindu and Muslim places of worship! It is also a known fact that the Norwegians disguised Prabhakaran as a Catholic Priest when they smuggled him out of Sri Lanka to travel through Maldives to Norway during/prior to The Tsunami of 26th December 2006. All these events have been reported in the press. Prabhakaran who is a Christian convert, has been protected by the Church right through in their efforts to destroy Buddhist/Hindu hold on our society.

The Catholic Church in its quest to destroy the religious & social fabric of this country has been working tooth and nail to bring in various opinions, inter-faith groups which they profess will bring religious harmony to this country. In fact, what it will do is exactly the opposite.

During the last 11 years under the Presidency of Chandrika Kumaratunga, she surrounded herself with Evangelical advisors who advocated a policy of shrewd manipulations to twist the judgement of The President into taking action against the majority Buddhists and Hindus and pampering the anti-Buddhist/Hindu activities of the Christian Churches.

It is through these years that the UN & UNDP has been advocating peace with the terrorists and funding over 60-70 projects to further pamper the LTTE terrorists. They have initiated the establishment of a Peace Secretariate under the Prime Minister's Office, provided funding to the TRO to modernize their communication systems as well as the computer labs in Kilinochchi through which the LTTE is supported directly. They have funded NGOs like Sarvodaya to an amount over Rs.2 million in a so called " peace movement through meditation programmes" and even nominated the Sarvodaya leader to receive an award for peace ( Mr. Ariyaratne was in Toronto to receive the award recently). What peace has Sarvodaya achieved for Sri Lanka after receiving such large volumes of money? While LTTE terrorists carried on a suicide bomb attack on our Army Commander- Sarvodaya leader was receiving a Peace Prize overseas! Having achieved peace, awarding a prize would have been a totally different story & everyone would have graciously lauded such a move.

In order to pacify and brainwash southerners of Sri Lanka who foreign powers think are the greatest stumbling block to their version of " peace" UN funding has also been given, to conduct a special programme to brainwash the Maha Sangha in Sri Lanka "that inter-religious and inter-racial harmony" could be attained only through peace with a bunch of blood -thirsty terrorists! The Maha Sangha of the south of Sri Lanka has been a special target in this programme. Through this programme, they have very shrewdly produced representatives of the Maha Sangha to go around and " parrot talk " about peace through negotiations. Our Maha Sangha is not accustomed to scheming plots of pro-Christian groups and therefore have fallen prey to such schemers.

Instead of going to the root of the terrorist movement which is by no means the concept of a "Tamil Homeland" ( majority Tamils in the North and East are not interested) which has brought immense suffering on the Tamil population (not in the south) BUT in the North where the majority Tamils live, no amount of international mediation can solve this problem. First and foremost all these foreign/ international mediators need to understand that the terrorist outfit of Prabhakaran is fighting a Christian - Hindu war to harass the majority Hindus into submission in Jaffna and the Northern & Eastern areas. This is why Caritas is so concerned about ensuring that their movement can be continued & requests foreign mediation!

Through the past 11 years of the LTTE activities, we have witnessed how much the SLMM and Western Powers have been bending over backwards to point the finger at the democratically elected government of this country as the " aggressor" whereas they have always been soft-peddling ALL THE ATTROCITIES of the terrorists, wining and dining with them and pampering them and believing every lie that the terrorists have been spreading to the world outside.

Caritas or any other foreign organisation (it does not matter) must understand that it is they who have aggravated the problem in this country by dictating terms to our GOSL on how to handle the terrorists. No matter how great a foreign power is, they will never understand the local situation or want to understand it because their agenda is not true peace, but one which will destabilize this country for ever. Foreign mediators are all cat's paws of the US who have hidden agendas for their own benefits. They are not interested in true & honest peace in this country. We do not need to duped all the time with sweet sounding words.

When the terrorists carried out a suicide bomb attack on our Army Commander, is that a gesture of peace on the part of the LTTE- may we ask from Caritas? Ever since the first round of Peace Talks in Geneva, how many atrocities have been carried out by the LTTE which has all been recorded? Do these attribute in anyway to a sincere & honest gesture of goodwill and peace from the LTTE? To give due credit to the Government of President Mahinda Rajapakse, maximum restraint has been observed to maintain peace UNTIL the LTTE attacked our Army Commander! Therefore, Caritas and all other Christian Organisations need to point their finger at the LTTE and request them to stop their atrocities first. They need to demand from the LTTE leadership of Prabhakaran & Thamilselvam that LTTE exhibits genuine peace by laying down their arms. Few governments would sit down with a terrorist group to negotiate peace BUT our GOSL has done it in the true sense of peace. The Catholic Church needs to accept these truths without appealing for international mediation!

The other matters stated in the Caritas appeal about the inconvenience to the residents of the North and East and displacement of people are to be expected when terrorists are obviously not interested in peace. There is no need to state bloated figures of numbers being displaced!

It needs to be emphasised that the situation has been aggravated only because of foreign mediation upto now and that further invitations for foreign mediation will not solve the problem with a bunch of blood-thirsty terrorists until they themselves make sincere gestures instead of finding lame excuses which the foreigners are so dumb to believe!
