FOUR LTTE GUERILLAS KILLED IN A SUSPECTED SUICIDE ATTACK BY THE KARUNA FACTION AT A LTTE CHECK POINT ROAD BLOCKBy Walter JayawardhanaTwo suicide bombers suspected to be members of the Karuna faction have
killed at least four Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam cadres manning
an entry/exit road block in the Eastern province. About 12.00 p.m. July 28 a three wheel trishaw came and stopped at the entry /exit road block manned by the LTTE guerillas. In a moment the whole trishaw exploded engulfing all people manning the check point. The LTTEs Batticaloa political leader Daya Mohan denied any one of their rebels were lost to this suicide attack and said it was not a suicide attack. Daya Mohan said it might be a trishaw remotely controlled by the army filled with explosives that blew.He told a Reuter correspondent: "The military sent a three-wheeler full of explosives and used remote control to explode it," But the LTTE controlled Tamil Net website had a slightly different story. The Tamil Net said: Two persons who were travelling in a three-wheeler from the SLA controlled territory were killed when explosives in their vehicle exploded at the gateway of the LTTE held Monkeykattu area in Vavunathivu in Batticaloa district, Friday noon. The three- wheeler was destroyed in the explosion, LTTE officials in Batticaloa said. The victims were suspected be persons who were abducted by the Sri Lankan troopers and their paramilitaries as a person left the three-wheeler towards SLA FDL seconds before the three-wheeler exploded. A man was seen leaving the three-wheeler before it reached the
LTTE FDL. The three-wheeler exploded when it reached the first forward defence line of the LTTE in Monkeykattu. However, the LTTE sources did not rule out the possibilty of
the victims being members of a paramilitary group, who were carrying
explosives into the LTTE controlled territory. Agency reports said the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission has said there were two people in the trishaw before it blew killing the Tamil Tiger guards. A Krunaa spokesman told an agency reporter that they have come to know about a suicide attack on the Tamil Tiger rebels but did not know any Karuna people were involved in it. The LTTE has repeatedly used suicide bombers to kill from Sri Lanka
troops to foreign leaders like Rajiv Gandhi but this is the first time
a suicide bomb attack has been used reportedly against them. |
