UNP WORKING COMMITTEE HAS GIVEN A BLANK CHECK TO RANIL WICKREMESINGHE TO SIGN A MOU SAYS ATTANAYAKABy Walter JayawardhanaThe protégé of Ranil Wickremesinghe and General Secretary
of the United National Party Tissa Attanayaka has attacked the Democratic
Wing of the party led by Karu Jayasuriya and said they should not be
unnecessarily worried about getting the permission of Working Committee
of the party for the MOU signed with Sri Lanka Freedom partys
Mangala wing as the working committee has given a blank check to the
leader to sign the MOU. UNP dissident and member of the democratic Wing Minister Laxman Yapa
Abeywardena has said the failure of the leadership to obtain the prior
OK for the MOU indicated the reigning dictatorship of the leadership
and lack of internal democracy in the UNP at present. He warned this
could become the second cause for litigation in addition to the present
one the party dissidents have filed. But he failed to indicate how the working committee has given a blank
check to the party leader and when. But Attanayaka indicating that the
details of the MOU were not known to the working committee said the
details of the MOU that was signed between his nayaka thuma
(respected leader) and the SLFP-M wing leader Mangala Samaraweera will
be revealed to the working committee at its next meeting. Dissidents retorted back by saying that the working committee has been
turned into a rubber stamp body of the nayaka thuma.Laxman
Yapa Abeywardena asked how a party leader who said a deputy leader of
the party was not necessary has now agreed to an office of a deputy
Prime Minister that has no provision in the party constitution or the
countrys constitution . While Laxman Yapa Abeywardena has said the Ranil-Mangala Rally which was held at Hyde Park instead of the customary UNP site of meeting , the Municipal Council grounds to conceal the non-attendance of many people Tissa Attanayaka said it was a great success. Laxman Yapa Abeywardena said while the UNP expected 500,000 people
the rally was attended by 15,000. But Tissa Attanayaka said the new
alliance would have massive rallies on August 10, 17 and 24 at Matara,
Anuradhapura and Nittambuwa. A rally in the Presidents home constituency
Hambantota is also being organized he said. |
