TAMIL TIGERS MINGLE WITH CIVILIANS AND KILLING TAMIL ANTI-LTTE POLITICAL PARTY ACTIVISTS IN THE EASTBy Walter JayawardhanaThe Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) whose military camps have
been wiped out from the Eastern Province has gone underground in the
area and has unleashed its assassination squads from the underground,
security forces say. Usually known as pistol gangs who operate after mingling with the civilians
have started killing Tamils who are engaged in political work opposed
to the LTTE. Sources said the most recently assassinated were members of the Eelam
People Democratic Party operatives and Karuna group political party
activists. Police sources said a Karuna group political activists who was operating
a political office at Thambalagama , Murali alis Nadarajan was assassinated
by a pistol gang member. He had been assassinated while his partner
had gone to buy some groceries, sources said. Ranjith Maligaspe of the
Uppuweli Police said his body was found by his partner when he returned
ito the house they rest near the political office run by Karuna. He
was found to be dead with pistol shot wounds. Meanwhile Police said the LTTE pistol gang also gunned down two Eelam
Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP) members in Batticaloa during afternoon
hours in the area. The EPDP, a political party of the Tamils opposed to the LTTE, said
the killed members were working at the EPDP political office at Chenkalady
in Batticaloa. They said suspected LTTE pistol gang members came and shot their party
workers , S. Srinivasan (31) and C. Wasanthan (29) at 12.25 August 30
at point blank. The Defense Ministry website said these members were stepping towards
Iyankerni along the Eravur Krishna Kovil to buy some commodities when
they were shot at. The bodies are kept at Eravur hospital mortuary.
