Tluppahi Clans Day Dreaming with a Modelling Duo – Part II

A.A.M.NIZAM, MATARA
A former Vice President of the SLFP Central Committee, Matara Electorate

Among the political parties in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party has faced the highest number of conspiracies aimed at destroying the Party. Some initiated by party members themselves and others launched by reactionary forces. Some of these conspiracies were not only aimed at destroying the party but also at eliminating the leader. The unsuccessful attempt made to poison and kill the founder of the Party on 25.08.59 at a Cabinet Meeting was the first such attempt. Most of the culprits claimed that they were revolting to prevent the Party drifting away from its core policies. The grand children and children of some conspirators are playing leading roles in the political arena today. Mr. Mangala Samaraweera is one of them. We have a common understanding that children are bound to imitate good deeds as well as bad deeds of their fathers, which we say in Sinhala as “Thaattha Kara de Putha Nokaroth Oo Nottige Putha”.

Many conspiracies to destroy the SLFP took place during the period the late Prime Minister Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike held the reins of the Party. Many of these plots were hatched with the objective of either preventing her or to obstruct her from implementing people’s friendly progressive measures. The immoral reactionary forces even employed her own children, particularly the ex-President Chandrika to politically defame her, destroy her and make her a powerless figurehead.

Following the bold steps taken by her to nationalize the oil companies and the missionary schools a coup d’etat was launched in 1962 by a pro-alien and an ethnical segment of the armed forces led by the grandfather of a prominent M.P in the Junk-UNP. Envied by her continuous implementation of people friendly measures such as widening the University education by establishing additional Universities, establishment of industries for production of tyre, textile, steel products, sugar and many others items utilising locally available raw materials the reactionary forces became determined to topple the government and halt the people’s friendly progressive measures.

The reactionary forces however succeeded in luring 14 SLFP Members of Parliament, including several Ministers and toppling the people’s government led by Mrs. Bandaranaike in 1964, forcing a General Election in 1965. Mr. Mangala Samaraweera;s father, Minister of Posts and Telecommunication the late Mr. Mahanama Samaraweera was a leading figure of this 14 member group whom Mrs. Bandaranaike condemned as those who stabbed her in the back, and the group became known as the “Pihi Partiya”, literally meaning the party of those who stab in the back. The verdict given by the masses to these 14 politicians sending them to political wilderness is a known history.

Despite these betrayals Mrs. Banadranaike was magnanimous in appointing Mr. Mangala Samaraweera as the party organisor for Matara Electorate. When the 17 years of tyrannical and State Terror rule of the UNP became utterly detested by the masses and there were clear signs that the masses are eagerly awaiting to elect a government led by Mrs. Bandaranaike, the reactionary forces afflicted with Sirimavo phobia in collaboration with the NGO gangs parachuted Chandrika with the objective of making Mrs. Bandaranike a powerless figure in the SLFP.

Mr. Samaraweera betraying the trust reposed in him by Mrs. Bandaranaike ganged up with S.B.Dissanayake and NGO vultures such as Victor Ivon and Sunanda Deshapriya and strived to promote Chandrika against Mrs. Bandaranaike for leading the party in the 1994 election and then to the post of President. Thus Mr. Samaraweera, as aspired by the reactionary forces, helped preventing Mrs. Bandaranaike assuming the leadership of the country and implementing the people friendly nationalistic policies of the SLFP. The SLFP under the leadership of Chandrika, assisted by Mangala and SB completely drifted away from its core policies to the extent that there were no glaring difference between the policies of Chandrika-SLFP and the UNP.

Mr. Samaraweera’s performance during his political career confirms that he used SLFP only as a political ploy to prevent the Party from implementing its nationalistic policies and strengthen the reactionary forces. He had been a party and strong promoter of all reactionary and anti-national policies implemented by ex-President Chandrika. There are many anecdotes of vested interests and reactionary forces deploying their agents in progressive and nationalistic parties either to waylay or to weaken such parties. There are reasons to believe that Mr. Samaraweera falls into this category as statements such as Dump the Sinhala Commission Report into the Waste Paper Basket etc., cannot be expected from persons committed to the policies of SLFP, as this was a much researched report which highlighted many threats facing this country.

Similar to the magnanimous appointment made by Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike, President Rajapakse too offered Mr. Samaraweera a Ministerial Post despite vicious and baseless criticism involving him personally and his family members. Can we expect such magnanimity from the Head of State of any other nation? The post crossover actions being taken by Mr. Samaraweera clearly indicate that he is being used by reactionary, terrorist and other vested interests to prevent the massive rural development work, to cease the military operations against the fascist terrorist outfit, to force reverse the people friendly policies of the present government, and to destabilize and topple the government.

Mr. Samaraweera’s political outfit called SLFP-M, popularly known as SLFP-Models Wing has presented a document which he claims as set proposals to develop this country. A careful study of the document shows that it is nothing other than plagiarized resubmission of periodical criticism of the government and demands being made by the reactionary elements, peace merchants, NGO vultures, and terrorist proxies. The so-called ideas have been presented as a set of dreams without any concrete proposals on how to realize these day dreams.

Voicing the calls being made by the terrorist proxies and NGO vultures the Day Dream document demands for halting the war and commence negotiations. When our gallant forces have successfully defeated the fascist terrorists in the jungles of Toppigala which even the forces of world’s 4th largest army the IPKF could not do what justification the Models Duo or any other reactionary outfit or person has to demand for halting the war and lay the ground for the defeated terrorists to rearm and restrengthen and once again subject the country to the terrorist menace which we have been afflicted for the last several decades? Is the Models Duo committed to save the country or save the terrorists?

The Models Duo who levels accusation for certain things have been a party to all such things, and have no right to speak about them. The Day Dreams Document if taken totally is a call for unity among all reactionary forces, including the terrorists to reject everything that we cherish as national, and subject the country and its resources to global forces for unconditional exploitation. Just to camouflage these core objectives delicate issues such as Executive Presidency, Electoral proposals, devolution etc., have been lightly articulated without any concrete proposals even on these issues. In total the document is neither a serious analysis of problems being encountered by the country nor something offering acceptable solutions. Therefore it has no value at all and worth only to be dumped in the Dust Bin.
