SINHALESE FLEE SOUTHERN VAVUNIYA DISTRICT IN FEAR OF TAMIL TIGERS WHO KILLED NINE HOME GUARDS

By Walter Jayawardhana

After repeated assaults by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) villagers in Alagalla Thiruwegama and Aluthgama in the Southern Vavuniya District ethnic Sinhala villagers have started fleeing their homes.

Complaining the protection provided by the government was not adequate the villagers have started fleeing towards the Galkandegama area in Medavachchiya, sources in Nothern Province said.
They said they were scared to stay in their villages after nine of the home guards protecting the villages were killed by the LTTE during the last few months.

The villagers have complained although Thiruvegama is about one kilometer long the villages had only two bunkers and the protection was not adequate.

They packed their meager belongings to trailors of hand tractors and fleeing the villages, the sources said.

At present, there are about 350 people camping out at the government school at Galkandegama, the sources said.

Vavuniya is a majority Tamil District but Southern area of it is inhabited by ethnic Sinhala people whose villages have been raided by Tamil Tigers in the past.
