ARUMUGAM THONDAMAN AND HIS PARTY LEAVES THE GOVERNMENT ON SOME UNSPECIFIED “INSULT”

By Walter Jayawardhana

President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government’s majority in the parliament was cut to the bare minimum when Arumugam Thondaman led Ceylon Workers Congress announced that they are withdrawing from the government.

The support of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna will be considered very much essential for the survival of the government since the government is left with 113 members in the 225 member parliament after Minister Thondaman and four deputy ministers of the Ceylon Workers Congress who represent up country tea estate workers resigned.

A week ago the pro-LTTE and UNP Western Province Member of Parliament Mano Ganeshan appealed to the CWC to join the Ranil Wickremesinghe and Mangala Samaraweera coalition. The appeal also went to the other smaller party representing to the Upcountry People’s Front led by another Minister Chandrasekhar. It was broadcast by the BBC Sandeshaya. Mano Ganeshan, the sole member of the Wester Province People’s Front sympathetic to LTTE and UNP has joined the Ranil-Mangala coalition.

CWC spokesman R.Yogarajan told reporters that they left because they felt insulted over an unspecified matter but would not disclose the real reason. He also called it a “misunderstanding.”
With CWC leader Arumugam Thondaman ,Minister of Yourth Empowerment having left the government ranks with his four deputy ministers in parliament, the government is left with only a majority of one member.

After de-valuing the military victory over the Eastern Province Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and Mangala Samaraweera are demanding immediate elections in the country.
If the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna withdraws its support to the government it gives from the opposition benches the defeat of the government in the parliament on a crucial vote is greater. But it is unlikely they would join Ranil Wickremesinghe and Mangala Samaraweera in toppling the government, analysts in Colombo said.
