BIRTH OF A NEW NEWSPAPER IN SRI LANKA

By Dr.Tilak S. Fernando

On the 23rd of October 2007 the newspaper industry in Sri Lanka gave birth to a new baby, The Colombo Post, an English broadsheet of quality. Published by Liberty Publishers Private Limited at 73 Isipathana Road, Colombo 5, a veteran journalist and former editor of the Daily News, Bandula Jayasekera has taken the formidable task of running the newspaper as its Managing Editor.

At present it is confined to a weekly newspaper that hits the newspaper stands throughout the country on every Tuesday. It is anticipated that it would spread its tentacles to Sinhala and Sunday editions in the very near future.

In its maiden editorial under the caption, " Wake up Sri Lanka" it carried a message loud and clear by placing on record that ' Colombo Post is a newspaper without any hidden agendas or political favours to gain'. Projecting its management policy clearly The Colombo Post displayed its intentions to be independent with objective views and without taking any sides.

The newspaper's main aim is going to be a 'dynamic force in Sri Lanka's struggle towards democracy' and it intends to open a new page in the newspaper culture in the country.

While considering Sri Lanka as the motherland of the Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Burghers, Malays and all other immigrants who have decided to live in and love this country, The Colombo Post attempts to reach out to all Sri Lankans and the Diaspora to create a distinct Sri Lankan identity and give the country and the world a true taste of Sri Lanka.

With this backdrop, The Colombo Post invites Sri Lankans and the Diaspora scattered throughout the world to partake in this process by turning the words into action and thereby uplifting the lives of Sri Lankan at home.
