Mr. Anandasangaree, you are almost there!

C. Wijeyawickrema

In "strongly condemning" A’pura attack Mr. A informed P that his "Eelam can never be achieved" (The Island, 10/29/2007). P did what he was supposed to do—to try to "kill" his enemy. In the same newspaper the retired geography professor G. H. Peiris said the GOSL or at least the security apparatus cannot get into a foolish "celebratory mood" when a wounded tiger is 50 miles away. Eternal vigilance is essential with kotis of all color and race.

P took the cyanide capsule path to Eelam with the direct and indirect backing of so many entities, local and foreign, including the "war is not winnable" crowd. But the Eealm idea really began in 1919 just one year after Tamils in South India demanded a separate state from London. They even tried to form an alliance with Ali Jinna, who thrived on the British concept of "India is a myth." Some Tamil leaders then expected a Pakistan path (from the British), just like some Tamils in the 1980s hoped for a Bangladesh path (from Indira Gandhi).

This history of colonial Ceylon, the UDI attempt by Vartharaja, an active anti-Hindi movement in Tamil Nad (fight against Hindia), corrupt and politically unstable Tamil Nad, caste-based separatist movements in Tamil Nad (demands to carve out two separate states out of present Tamil Nad), World Tamil Federation’s goal of a Tamil country with a seat in UN and finally the defects in the Indian Federal model, are all factors that requires Mr. A to go the extra mile to show that he is really genuine. That step is for him to declare that there are no homelands in Sri Lanka.

With a Tamil homeland device the late S. J. V. Chelvanayagam was able to trap a generation of Tamil politicians into a prison and made the lives of present day Tamil intellectuals (moderates?) hazardous. Mr. A once politely declined the offer of a seat made to him by JHU and the late Amirthalingam did not realize the value of the Leader of the Opposition position that destiny dropped on his lap at a turning point in Sri Lanka’s history.

The archaeological field note book written by Ven. Ellawala Medhananda titled "Our heritage of the North and East of Sri Lanka," ( 2003) provides proof to the effect that the Northern and Eastern Provinces had Sinhala Buddhist ruins dating back to 3 or 2 century before Christ, not just in a few isolated spots but widespread all over the regions. There has been a systematic effort to "erase" this imprint and to replace Buddhist sites with non-Buddhist new erections. The 2002 CFA marked a period of destruction of Buddhist ruins unheard of in world history.

In 1958, SWRD made a mistake by agreeing to hand over land matters in these areas to N and E District Councils. He simply did not know the history that only a solitary Buddhist monk was able to record with life-threatening field work for 40 years. This reminds how a young Tamil Christian graduate of anthropology/sociology from the Peradeniya University went to Thailand to study the Theravada Buddhism in the early 1960s and wrote a book titled "Buddhism betrayed" in 1992 with a cover photo of a Buddhist monk supplied to him by another half-white Christian female.

Unless Mr. A comes out of his albatross, no amount of blaming P or denying Eelam could make him a trustworthy national leader among the majority Sinhala Buddhists. There is no other source region in the world for the Sinhala Buddhists and empowerment of people is different from erecting a set up that would break the island into two warring "states." Any APRC majority member-imposed set up which does not expressly state that there are no homelands in Sri Lanka is a death trap which will destroy a 2600 year old unique civilization, which survived foreign physical invasions until 2005 and a parade of human rights merchants in 2007.
