MINISTER JEYARAJ FERNANDOPULLE SAYS THE CWC RESIGNATIONS PROBLEM WOULD BE RESOLVED BY MONDAYBy Walter JayawardhanaMinister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle said that the five CWC parliamentarians
have not tendered their resignations from the government but only from
their ministerial positions and the resignation crisis will be resolved
very soon. He said Minister Arumugam Thondaman and Muththu Sivalingam are two
of his personal friends and he is trying to resolve this problem by
negotiations. Fernandopulle said the whole episode has taken place due a misunderstanding
over few exchange of words and the CWC members have not tendered their
letters of resignation over policy differences of President Rajapaksas
government. The Minister said it was wrong to say Thondaman and his Deputy Ministers
have resigned because of joining the Mangala Samaraweera faction and
the resignations did not have anything to do with the new wing. When the London radio station BBC Sandeshaya insisted for an answer
for the resignations Fernandopulle said it was over few words exchanged
between Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa and CWC member Muththu
Sivalingam. He said he expected the five members of the CWC to be back in the cabinet
by Monday the latest. According to Fernandopulee Thondaman and his party colleagues have
not left government benches and nothing of that nature ever occurred.
He said the Government power remained at 119 members in the parliament
and the opposition strength remained at 105. He said he could assure even if the government strength fell below
the strength of the opposition there is no possibility that the government
would fall. Although , Fernandopulle did not mention the fact, there
is widespread belief in the Colombo political spectrum that the Janatha
Vimukthi Peramuna would cast their parliamentary votes on crucial issues
leading to the fall of the government and a general election, while
that demand is being made the leading political slogan of the Ranil
Wickremesinghe led United National Party. |
