ONE SRI LANKAN WOMAN DROWNS AND MANY MORE IN TROUBLE WHEN BOAT CAPSIZES OFF SAMOS ISLAND, GREECE

At least one Sri Lankan woman drowned when a a boat carrying some South Asian illegal immigrants was capsized in the in the Aegean Sea near the Greek Samos Island, reports from Greece said.

According to reports the thirty year old Sri Lankan national drowned and her body was washed ashore. She has been identified as Rathnasingham Janaki.

Greek Coast Guards rescued 27 people from the sea reports said.Reports said illegal immigrants reach these islands and usually use small boats to gain entry to the mainland Greece by crossing over.

It is not yet known whether any other Sri Lankans died in this tragedy but reports said 12 Afgan national , including two children have been rescued from the sea by the Greek Coast Guards.
Greek reports said Janaki and other members of the family and other Sri Lankans were in the boat when it tried to cross over to Greece and capsized.

Reports further said the deceased Janaki’s sister and another Sri Lankan have been arrested by the immigration authorities . Other reports said some others who were rescued have been admitted to the hospital in Samos island.

The Sri Lankan Embassy has announced that they would not be able to elaborate on these scanty information until Monday.
