WE SALUTE SANATH JAYASURIYA
THE REAL MASTER BLASTER

M D P DISSANAYAKE

Dunstan and Breeda Jayasuriya would have never thought on 30 June 1969 that their new born son Sanath Teran Jayasuriya would have stormed the cricketing world with exceptional quality of batting and bowling. The parents would have never visualized that their son would become the only player in the world to score more than 12000 runs and take over 300 ODI wickets. For the parents to be proud of a great son like Sanath, reasons are endless. This son holds the fastest 50 in ODIs, holds the record for highest number of sixes (241), became the first Sri Lankan to play 100 Tests, joint holder of second highest ODI runs of 189 with Viv Richards,.

They must be pretty proud parents today, knowing that their son is not only a great cricketer, but was the first cricketer to be appointed as a United National Goodwill Ambassador for the prevention of HIV/AIDS among young people in Sri Lanka.

He has continuously provided a 'comfort zone' for Sri Lanka, scoring runs at a rapid rate. With a healthy batting average of 40 and 340 being the highest test runs in an innings has made this man a real master blaster.

According to Glenn McGrath, Sanath has" changed the way ODI game is played, his stormy innings in the 1996 WC changed everyone's thinking about how to start an innings". In 1996 WC, Sanath was honoured the Man of the Touranament for his all-around performance.

It is a great sense of relief that Sanath is continuing to play ODIs, for many more years. We wish him happiness in his retirement from Test cricket and spend more time with his wife, 2 daughters and son.
