Silavathurei- Political Stunt for the Losers, Treasure Trove for the Winners

Dilrook Kannangara

The mourning leader is mourning again; this time for the fall of Silavathurei. He tries to comfort himself and his fellow losers by calling it a ‘political stunt’. Ironically, he himself is engaged in many political stunts for the UNP.

If it was a political stunt, how come a very large haul of explosives were found there?
Again these losers have turned their backs to the truth. Tiger military spokesman had said that only humanitarian workers of the LTTE were stationed there. Then what on earth were they doing with landmines, detonators, small mortars, attack boats and APMs? Is this the way LTTE conducts its ‘humanitarian missions’? No wonder the army had to intervene and stop the LTTE ‘humanitarian mission’ of guns and bombs!

It further affirms that the LTTE regularly uses refugees, human shields, civilians and other ‘humanitarian nonsense’ to transport, store and use weapons. This is how tents provided as tsunami aid ended up sheltering LTTE camps in the East.

Jungle warfare
Where do the terrorists live? Naturally in the jungles, and in Vanni which is mostly a jungle. Therefore, real military victories should be recorded in these jungles and not in London or anywhere that harbours the cowards who only finances (never fights along the child soldiers) the doomed Tamil Elam struggle. However, the security forces have beaten the tiger in its den; if anyone thought that only the LTTE is capable of guerrilla warfare, think again. LTTE leaders and cadres alike are shivering in terror knowing too well that the ‘Mahasohon Brigade’ is coming to get them and there is no way out.

The LTTE spokesman challenges the army to take Vanni. This is a shrewd attempt to divert attention from LTTE’s supply routes. The army is busy engaged in cutting the arteries that supply vital resources to the LTTE. Over 510 kilometres of beachfront in the East has been taken barring any LTTE attempt to land arms shipments in the East; satellite camps of the LTTE around their main Vaharei sea bases that were supposed to be used as the launching pads for a Trinco bound assault have been destroyed; Mannar LTTE supply route is also being closed. It was a few months ago that many LTTE trawlers loaded with arms were destroyed off Manar. Destroying LTTE weapons supply routes is much more important than attacking where these weapons are consumed. If all LTTE supply routes are taken by the army, there won’t be a battle for Vanni, it will fall automatically! That is exactly what the security forces are doing and they have stopped getting orders from the LTTE after Ranil yet again went into political wilderness.

Unnamed Operations
Just as the names of most gallant soldiers in the battlefront are not revealed, their victorious military operations are also anonymous. If the government wants to take political mileage out of military operations, they would surely have used fancy names like ‘Balawegaya’, ‘Akunu Pahara’, ‘Indrakheela’, etc.

LTTE’s handicapped sea tiger wing
Photos were afloat showing the sad face of ‘Soosai’ in a wheelchair; the Tamil Elam struggle has taken away both his legs; he can never lead the sea tigers again. Many have conveniently forgotten that it was during ‘Soosai’s’ reign that the Sea Tigers achieved most of its success. Mullaitivu attack, many attacks on Trinco and even the Elephant Pass attack were all seaborne amply supported by Soosai’s cadres. All other significant LTTE attacks in the past decade were launched by Karuna Amman. It is widely expected that their absence would spell disaster for the LTTE in the all important battles ahead.

Chemical warfare
There is enough evidence that the LTTE is trying to use chemical weapons. Truck loads of sulphuric acid have been apprehended by the security forces. Tigers have always had potassium cyanide which they used for their ‘suicide pill’. Recently they have replaced it with the suicide belt that can cause destruction in addition to a harmless suicide. This plan also saves them a lot of potassium cyanide. Their chemical plan is very clear. Potassium cyanide plus sulphuric acid gives hydrogen cyanide gas (heavily used in the World War Two and was banned thereafter) and Potassium Sulphate (a fertilizer which is not harmful unless inhaled or consumed deliberately). Hydrogen cyanide gas (HCN) is a highly toxic agent that can kill a large number of living beings in one attack if used effectively. There are many instances of its attempted use in the recent past. Japan’s Aum Shinrikyo cult attempted to use this gas (named ‘serin’ in the incident) in 1995targeting an underground train station. Al Qaeda also planned an attack on a New York rail station using it in 2003 but failed. And the LTTE is surely following these. Their first chemical attack came before all these in 1992 where a group of army soldiers were killed using chemical agents.

However, a LTTE chemical attack is going to make things even worse for them. Firstly there will be violent retaliatory attacks by the security forces that will be so deafening that it will awaken the sleeping International Community even after a LTTE chemical attack.

Secondly, the security forces can also use chemicals that are not banned by any Convention, if they so wish to. A very good example is the use of herbicides. Dioxins and other agents were used by the US Air Force in Vietnam; it was not a banned substance although it created severe birth defects in children born in both Vietnam and America. However, there are advanced herbicides that are used by local farmers; these may be used to clear the jungles where LTTE cadres are hiding. Even a wild tiger cannot survive where the jungle canopy is not there!

Alternatively the security forces can use fuel bombs with a devastating impact on LTTE bases and hideouts that will not leave any stone unturned! According to published reports, fuel bombs were in the list of weapons in the multi-million dollar deal with Pakistan.

By any count the defence establishment of the country will have to reverse the very damaging impact on the morale of security forces following a LTTE chemical attack. This can only be done by a savage retaliatory attack using whatever means available. Given the modes operandi of the Lankan authorities in the recent past, they would rather use such means than perish like Sunil Thabru and hundreds of security officers (for no fault of theirs though) during the second short reign of Ranil.

Tigers back the proposed ‘No Confidence’ Motion
LTTE military spokesman has also revealed that they support the proposed ‘No Confidence’ Motion of the UNP. According to him the only way to ‘peace’ (as defined by the LTTE terrorist organisation) is by toppling this government and reinstating a UNP led government so that the now defunct CFA could be salvaged. It was just three months ago that he rejected with contempt the existence of an alleged SLFP-LTTE pact. During the last presidential election Ranil received an overwhelming majority votes from the Northern and Eastern Provinces, most notably from Vanni (the tiger den) where Ranil recorded his highest percentage votes from all the districts.

Silavathurei liberation and Amirthalingam’s eighty
It was no coincidence that both events happened within a short space of time. These are only the two sides of the same coin; though contrasting; both converge on the same point – liberation of ordinary Tamils. Although the former Opposition Leader initially sided with the LTTE, he soon realized the difference between liberation and aberration. His post was stripped by the present Opposition Leader’s uncle and was killed by his sweetheart. Delivering the memorial lecture Dr Rajan Hoole made some very valid points which Mr Amirthalingam came to know only too late. He challenged the Tamils to go beyond LTTE propaganda and see for themselves the truth, accept the Sinhala community as a group of friends and neighbours and respect others’ views and opinions. It is a very timely message to save the Tamil community as a section of it is likely to follow the LTTE to defeat, death and destruction. The absence of TNA members and the participation of Mr Anandasangaree speaks volumes of who the real Tamil representatives are.

Cowards of the Tamil Diaspora
The recent operation was another loss for the cowards of the Tamil Diaspora; their money is being wasted by Parabakaran on personal gratifications. These cowards should rather be fighting for their ‘Tamil Homeland’ in Vanni than merely sending a few thousand dollars for the LTTE. LTTE has enough and more dollars, what they lack is fighting cadre. Unless these cowards come forward, the LTTE is going to run-out of cadres to use their expensive weapons. Along with it, the Tamil Elam will perish. Money cannot buy courage as it has only bought child soldiers and cowards.
