Ranil's call for foreign intervention

S. Akurugoda

The opposition leader Ranil Wickramasinghe's call for foreign intervention at his most recent meeting with the so-called Civil Monitoring Commission amidst former Australian Foreign Minister Gareth Evans's declaration that any attack on the LTTE-held areas in the Wanni can be a "potential case for international intervention", is more than a coincident.

The United National Party is fast moving towards its pre 1956 era, reminding us the UNP under the leadership of Sir John Kotalawala. Sir John insulted the Buddhist monks, suggesting that their (Monk's) buttock should be painted with "thara' (tar). Sir John, being a retired service personal of the old generation, failed to understand the heartbeat of the ordinary people and used to utter whatever comes to his mind without considering their repercussions, probably not to the same extent as the current UNP leader.

The influence of the church towards higher education, employment, business etc was at its peak prior to 1956 and the government assisted schools and orphanages run by missionaries were instrumental in religious conversion. The Sinhala education was limited to 'pirivena'(education centres maintained by Buddhist clergy at temples) and that was the time, the Sinhala educated youths were depicted as monkeys in cartoons appeared in Lake House group of newspapers published by Ranil's farther, Esmund Wickramasinghe.

The anti-Buddhist anti anti-Sinhala stance of the UNP was a major factor contributed to the stunning defeat of the party in 1956.

After the social revolution of 1956, the orphanages started diminishing since the government withdrew its financial assistance. The most of the government assisted schools were taken over by the government, except few, and the financial assistance was withdrawn to schools which were not handed over to the government. The reaction to those steps taken by the government of Mrs Sirimavo Bandaranayake was the 1962 abortive coup led by the top brass of the police and the armed forces, all of them were found to be ardent supporters of a particular religion. Subsequent nationalisation of the foreign owned estates and Petroleum distribution would have, definitely, caused some more blows to their owners of the West.

With the emergence of the UNP government in 1977, various forms of foreign funded NGOs and some secretive conspiratorial organizations found Sri Lanka, as a safe heaven to start their 'business' and have grown from strength to strength through both Chandrika and Ranil administrations.

Thus the country has experienced religious and cult hucksters since 1977 and some, no doubt, have achieved the power now possessed by secretive group of politicians and wealthy businessmen who are known among their adherents. These ' mysteries forces' , not confined to our country alone, with the tact support of the so-called international community seem to be pushing the many other countries throughout the world towards regime changes and install leaders whom they think will fit into their secretive agenda. Being secretive, these movements carryout its objectives through personal, trusting, informal, unpublicized contact between people.

Ranil Wickramasinghe has been appointed as the Vice Chairman of the Asia pacific region of The International Democratic Union (IDU) in July 2005. The IDU is a working association of over 80 conservative, Christian democratic and like-minded political parties of the centre and centre right as it identifies by itself on its website www.idu.org. The entire membership of this Union consists of predominantly Christian countries in the world. Although the Union is said to be those of centre right, by looking at the political parties listed as its members, one can easily conclude that most of them come under well known ultra rightwing political groups,

We all remember, just few years ago, how Ranil was planning to celebrate the completion of 500th year of arrival of Portuguese. The unethical conversion and erection of churches even in remote areas with predominantly Buddhist population took place remarkably during his tenure of office as PM.

Affiliation of a leader of a main political party in a country like Sri Lanka, where more than 70% of the population are Buddhists, to a rightwing Union of this nature will (no doubt) strengthen the hands of so-called international community when fulfilling their secretive agendas. That was why all the anti-national elements were seen around Ranil and spent millions of rupees to ensure his victory during the last Presidential election.

Having realised that he has failed to achieve his long-standing dream, after thirty years in politics, Ranil is now getting ready to give another go with the help of the said secretive conspiratorial foreign funded non-governmental organisations and their local agents who appear in public under various names. More than the LTTE terrorist leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, these organisations and their paid agents are disturbed by the fall of Eastern province from the terrorist's hand and appeared to be determined to pull their all the available strings via their favourite puppet for a regime change, if possible, or to prevent further security operations against the LTTE.

The statements made by the Tamil Tiger terrorists on one side, and the recent unfavourable statements of the High Commissioners, Ambassadors and other paid agents of the so-called international community, Bishops of Colombo and Jaffna etc on the other side are nothing else, but the two sides of the same coin.

The opposition leader's repeated scream for foreign intervention, displeasure expressed on the victory achieved by the armed forces against the LTTE terrorists in the East and the ongoing attack on the JHU Buddhist monks are indication of the extent of frustration he is undergoing at the moment. Thus, it is time for his well-wishers to take a note of that and to advise him accordingly, to prevent any serious psychosomatic breakdown due to possible collapse of his dream world.
