CANNON OF A KFIR JET EXPLODES INJURING 4 -ONE SERIOUSLY

Defense sources said a 30 mm Cannon of an Air Force Kfir jet accidentally exploded injuring four airmen-one seriously at Colombo's main air force base at Katunayaka.

The accident happened June 8 at 3.45 p.m. the Media Center for National Security said. But according to the Defense Ministry website it happened at 2.45 p.m.

Agency reports said people living around the airbase heard loud explosions during this time.

Four airmen who were who were engaged in maintenance work on the Israeli built jet were injured in the blast and admitted to the Negombo General Hospital. Hospital sources said one out of them was in a serious condition and was being transported to the National Hospital Colombo.

Air Force sources said no damage has happened to the Kfir Jet of which the cannon exploded or other aircraft parked in the air base hangar.

Defense Ministry said the Air Force Command immediately started an investigation to find out the cause of the accident.
