Countdown to the Historic Thoppigala Liberation

Dilrook Kannangara

The day is not so further in the future when Sri Lanka security forces put a full stop to LTTE domination in the East. Both patriots and traitors are keeping a close vigil for this historical event obviously for different reasons. Those who decided to ignore military developments are trying their level best to belittle these victories.

In this backdrop Colonel Karuna, leader of the elite Jeyanthan Brigade of the LTTE, have declared war on ‘yalpanis’. Although regional friction is very destructive for the whole country and hence need to be toned down peacefully; there is no justification for another war this time against the TMVP.

The outcome, however, would be the complete loss of fighting cadre for the LTTE. So far the LTTE sourced most of its fighters from the east. They were not even recognized as part of the LTTE and when they died it was just another casualty with no commemoration. Considering the number of annual LTTE commemorations, easterners are clearly neglected. Time has come to counter this discrimination.

LTTE commanded a lot of respect from the Northerners for ‘delivering the goods’ with least casualties to the Northerners. In times ahead the LTTE will have to break this trust and conscript anyone and everyone from Wanni. Subjugated, suppressed and neglected easterners are no longer the cheap labour for the LTTE operation. If the Northerners ever thought that they were superior, now it is the time to shed that nonsense. Time is drawing near when they have to fight for their ‘self-determination’ themselves. Not a hint of doubt, they cannot do it.

This is the real significance of a liberated East and a liberated Jaffna. First it was kappang (false tax), then it was false legitimacy, free flow of money and weapons and now procurement of fighting cadre. The three forces, the special forces, the STF, the police and the paramilitaries have dealt the fatal blow to the LTTE. It is a matter of time till this wounded tiger succumb to its injuries.

A popular criticism is that the armed forces would be unable to hold on to liberated area as they are ‘too stretched’. However, what these false analysts fail to see is that in order to penetrate the new FDLs the terrorists will have to mobilize a very large force (in spite of having severe recruitment difficulties). This easily visible gathering will attract aerial attacks and a record breaking toll of LTTE casualties can result in as in the 1995 August LTTE attempts to overrun the FDL around Welioya, etc. Rapid deployment of mortar positions and supersonic jets would mean that the LTTE cannot launch 1999 style attacks anymore.

The next terror strategy is to attack Colombo, etc. to divert the defence concentration. However, ferocious and swift retaliatory attacks have deterred the LTTE and any more attempts would result in the use of heavy explosives on heavily fortified terror bunkers in Wanni.

Security forces have brought the war close to home for the LTTE and they have to battle it out there in order to survive. Hide and seek play in the jungles will end pretty soon.

Global developments are also in our favour; Britain has leant a good lesson on terrorism (though it may forget it soon); it has ranked the LTTE as the next most ruthless terror group after Al Qaeda. Prompt government response has silenced not only vociferous pro-LTTE activists and politicians but also cowardly pro-LTTE busybodies. Did the British bow down to terror demands; did they sit down for negotiations; or did they consider alleged discrimination against Muslims, etc as claimed by Al Qaeda? Never; although they advise us to do nonsense with our problems, when similar issues occur they have stuck to their guns. What would have happened had we listened to the High Commissioner, etc. and soft paddled our terrorism issue? We would be the laughing stock of the world community. Yet again Gotabaya’s winning strategy has prevailed.

We can expect a renewed effort to displace him in the near future by all kinds of traitors. Well done Gotabaya, even the British are following your moves.
