Breed & Creed of International Beaurocrats

ASOKA S.

Often various officials from International agencies come to Sri Lanka and offer advice as well as issue statements of condemnation of the Lankan government policy against terrorism. Almost all of these highly paid beauraucrats come from rich countries of Europe and even Japan. They are paid wages in excess of $10000 per month, travel often in first class on free air tickets and live in luxury star class hotels. As growing up kids in their own countries they very likely went to college in a car, lived in the comforts of a rich society, had absolutely no shortage of good food and fun. In short these people least understand what it is to grow up in a poor country, bring up a family in a poor country and make a living in a poor country. Worst still they have the least understanding of what it is like trying to make a living in a country infested by vicious terrorist organization led by a megalomaniac.

Furthermore very likely after finishing a post graduate degree from a fancy university they land a cushion job in one of these so called world bodies. As a routine part of their job they pick a country like Sri Lanka and apply all the book knowledge they acquired in rich kid universities. They have the least understanding of the culture, traditions and problems of the poor people of these countries. Then they try to justify their existence by finding shortcomings and lapses of such poor countries who are fighting to feed and cloth their people as best as they can while fighting a huge terrorist apparatus. Basically this is how they make their bread and butter; shamelessly.

This is precisely what Lois Arbor and Matsuura have done. These are typical armchair bureaucrats. If ever Lanka is to get authentic advice let there be bureaucrats from India, Chine or even Malaysia who have the best chance of understanding and appreciating fully what Lanka is going through. When Mahatma Ghandi came to India from S. Africa to start his non violent struggle against the British Raj he advocated to his colleagues that they could not fight the British living in mansions. That they should live ordinary Indian lives to get a first hand experience of the Indian village. This way their struggle will truly reflect Indian aspirations.

Pres Rajapaksha carries a burden and responsibility that these arm chair high caliber clerks will never understand nor will they care to understand. They get paid no matter what. Rajapaksha is trying to improve the living standards of his people while also protecting his people and the land from a hell bent killer group. On the country these clerk's only worry is to find the best restaurant for dinner or the best night club for night fun. They indeed are the luckiest people on earth; earn lots of money for taking no responsibility for nothing. If anything they will poison the world opinion against a poor country like Lanka trying to keep the head above water.

Lankan leadership must make it mandatory that none of these high profile clerks are afforded any facilities whatsoever unless they clarify the purpose of their mission. They should be told in clear terms that they should poke their useless finger elsewhere perhaps into their own dirty closets. We may to poor but we are far from stupid.
