EFFECTIVE AND STRONG MEASURES NEEDED TO END THE BOMB CULTURE.

A.A.M.NIZAM MATARA.

The reactionary forces represented by all shades of unpatriotic gangs and proxy elements guided and funded by the terrorists are determined and united on two major issues. To launch a concerted programme to prevent the defeat of terrorism resulting in a victory to our gallant armed forces, and depose the government by hook or crook to halt the massive indigenous development programme being launched in the countryside. There is a huge collaboration among the unpatriotic and terrorist proxy elements to achieve both these goals.

Creating a fear phychosis among the masses in Colombo by spreading highly exaggerated reports of abductions and carrying out roadside bomb blasts to unleash a Sinhala backlash are key aspects of this vicious programme. The controversial decision taken by Police personnel baffled with the security problem to send back people from North and East staying in Colombo lodges without valid reasons to their home towns has been tactfully used by these reactionary elements as a major anti-government, anti-war propaganda stunt.

There are over one hundred various kinds of lodges sprinkled in many locations in Colombo housing several thousand visitors and scores of unscrupulous elements including hardcore terrorists waiting for operational instructions. They charge daily rates ranging from Rs. 500 to 1000 without food. Police forces fearing possible further roadside bomb blasts, and under the scorn of politically motivated elements for inaction to prevent the so-called abductions, bomb blasts were compelled to take some meaningful measures to protect the masses of Colombo from possible threats to their peaceful life, since each day of delay on their part to weed out threatening elements may lead to untold misery.

It is estimated that there are about 20,000 persons from the North and East are presently staying in lodges in Colombo. The step to send back nearly 300 of them on long occupation without valid reasons in 8 buses had been taken with the good intention to protect the masses and there were no signs of forced eviction as photographs in the newspapers showed people walking-out without any coercion.

Colombo had been the theatre of periodic anarchy unleashed by the terrorists in the past. 86 people were killed and nearly 1500 persons were injured in the Central Bank bomb blast. Galadari blast killed 13 persons and injured 113 including 33 foreigners. 50 odd persons were killed and over 200 injured in the Maradana bomb blast. Dehiwela bomb blast killed 63 persons and injured 366.

Many politicians including President Premadasa, former Ministers Lalith Athulath Mudali, Ranjan Wijeratne, Laxman Kadiragamar, Gamini Dissanayake, and C.V.Gooneratne, were murdered in Colombo by the terrorists. Other than in the case of President Premadasa, Colombo lodges became the launching pads for all other murders. Furthermore, the murders of many officers of the intelligence unit following the Millenium City betrayal were launched from these lodges. If the 10 kg claymore mine found at Maligawatte was blasted it also would have added another toll to the number of dead and injured.

on, and it is the terrorist out who should be blamed for their predicament.

Similarly the treacherous politicians who wait for a fall of a hat to cry foul about the government and the security forces and who are intentionally blind to terrorist atrocities including forced suction of blood for treatment of high ranking terrorists, have made a despicable attempt to misuse the parliamentary impunity and deliver ferocious speeches in the Parliament in order to get cheap publicity over the issue, and create disharmony in the country. The reply given to the speech of Mano Ganeshan elected by Colombo UNP voters in today’s (09.06.07) Island Editorial is highly laudable, and worth quoting for the benefit of readers who may have missed it.

“Another politician (Mano Ganeshan) promptly chose to call the eviction of Tamils ‘ethnic cleansing!’They are entitled to their views. But, where were those champions of human rights when the LTTE forcibly evicted tens of thousands of Muslims who had been living in the North for generations at a two-hour notice in 1990? They were allowed to carry only a change of clothes with them. Ear studs of women and girls were removed with pliers! They are still languishing in welfare centres in Puttalam. That, Mr. Ganeshan, is ethnic cleansing!”

Our master traitor Ranil Wickremasinghe, who is suffering from chronic selective amnesia has blamed the government for violating human rights and drawing the incident parallel to eviction of Jews in Germay by Hitler, Arabs in Israel, and blacks in South Africa. His erstwhile colleague Mr. Rajitha Senaratne says in the same Parliamentary debate, “However the Opposition Leader when he was a minister of the UNP cabinet said the then government was not worried about human rights. When we came to witness the debate in Parliament about the abduction and assassination of journalist Richard de Zoysa, Ranil Wickremesinghe said he was not worried about human rights or organizations like the Mothers Front, Sons Front or any other front.”

In fact the Junk-UNP of Ranil Wickremasinghe has no right to talk about human rights violations. The government did not massacre those boarded in the lodges but used civilised means to protect the Colombo residents. I would like to remind here that during Ranil Wickremasinghe’s Batalanda Beeshana Era, even possession of ID cards with addresses of certain districts were liable to get killed. Three brothers from Polhena in the Matara Electorate was found dead in the beaches of Negombo for the only crime of possessing ID Cards with Matara addresses, although they belonged to a UNP family. There were many such incidences of persons possessing ID cards with Matara, Hambantota, Moneragala districts found in other districts without valid reasons (similar to Colombo lodgers) ended up in torture chambers or found dead. Likewise, the innocent policemen amounting to over 600 who sought safe transport from the terrorist outfit under an agreement with the government was brutally murdered by the terrorist outfit.

The steps taken to safe transport these persons speak volumes about the security forces’ concern for the safety and protection of innocent masses although it is not a hundred percent fool proof measure. It is the responsibility of a government to provide protection to masses and safeguard them from all kinds of threats and dangers. It is in this spirit that the governments temporarily evacuated Tamils from Colombo and transported them in ships to North when their life was threatened in the past. Instant action taken by the President to look into the complaints about the transport action and his pledge to take necessary remedial and preventive measures is indeed appreciable
