TAKE STRONG ACTION AGAINST TERRORIST GNANAKOON'S ATTEMPT TO BUY OVER GOVERNMENT PARLIAMENTARIANS.

A.A.M.NIZAM MATARA.

Liberation of the East and the imminent fall of subjugated areas in the North are agonizing predicaments for Gnanakoons, Lingams, Ganeshans, Sarathys and their ilk in the Tamil community financing, shielding, and promoting the fascist terrorists. Three decades of their illegitimate struggle to forcefully or cunningly grab a vital chunk of this country’s territory has become almost a nightmarish illusion.

If their conglomerate is to succeed in their objectives, either a gang of international scoundrels should be persuaded to interfere in the governance of the country under the pretext of human rights violations or the Born Sinhala gang of Ravis, Rosys, Johns, Michaels and Fernandos headed by the treacherous Ranil, slavish to foreign elements, and committed to debase and dishonour the country’s traditional values and beliefs should be placed to run the country. The recent discourses of Gareth Evans and Brad Adams and the Gnanakoon’s monetary offernings are absolutely inter-linked and calculated conspiracies to topple the government that need severe condemnation by the masses and a thorough investigation by the government.

Based on the involvement of Gnanakoons in the past and their open support for the terrorists, the statement made by the Minister Mr. Karu Jahyasuriya in the Parliament on the 8th August should be viewed very seriously. The obstruction made by the UNP and TNA MPs during his statement by making boorish sounds and utterances in an attempt to submerge Mr. Jayasuriya”s voice itself confirms that there is truth in what Mr. Jayasooriya disclosed. He disclosed that Charles Gnanakoon has contacted two Parliamentarians in his group and offered one million rupees each for crossing over to the Opposition.

It was also disclosed that Gnanakoon has informed these 2 MPs that he is prepared to buy over 20 MPs in a similar manner. Further, Mr. Mangala Samaraweera’s claim that he could muster 22 Government MPs to cross over, Gnanakoon’s claim of his preparedness to buy-over 20 MPs, and Mr. Samaraweera’s purported visit to Singaore last week throws out a lot of suspicion. Charles Gnanakoon is the person who manages the terrorist shipping fleet which amounts to 22 ships.

All Sri Lankans would remember that in July 2000 the same terrorist Gnanakoon became a controversial figure in Sri Lankan politics in the run-up to the 2000 General Election. Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe who has a long family relationship and childhood acquaintance with Gnanakoons made a flashing visit to Singapore with three of his cronies, purportedly to have breakfast in Singapore and held secret discussions with Charles Gnanakoon at Singapore’s Conrad Hotel on the 18th and 19th. Mr. Samaraweera and his minion Sripathy Suriarachchi cried from every rooftop about this secret meeting and claimed that Mr. Wickremasinghe had signed a secret pact with Gnanakoon to obtain terrorist support for UNP candidates in the election. Although Mr. Wickremasinghe acknowledged that he met Gnanakoon at Singapore and questioned from the Sunday Times correspondent what was wrong in having that meeting, he never disclosed the matters discussed. Upto now the matters discussed at this meeting and decisions made remain a closely guarded secret between Mr. Wickremasinghe, Gnanakoon and the terrorist hierarchy, similar to the terms and conditions of the Ranil-Mangala secret pact.

Although the UNP could not win the 2000 Election, they were able to topple the government within a few months and force the country to go for another election in 2001 December in which the terrorist gang played a major role. Once again during this election campaign, Mr. Mangala Samaraweera and Mr. Suriarachchi claimed about Gnanakoon’s involvement in financing the crossover of several PA Ministers and in TV interviews Mr. Samaraweera claimed that a large suitcase full of currency notes was delivered to Mr. Thilanga Sumathipala for distribution to UNP candidates, and for buying votes. Even in his annual November address the terrorist leader called upon the people to elect Mr. Wickremasinghe.

Gnanakoon family is a family of traditional UNPers with close links with Mr. Wickremasinghe family and Gnanakoon brothers, Jayantha Gnanakoon living in California and Charles Gnanakoon in Singapore are reported to be childhood friends of Mr. Wickremasinghe. Jayantha Gnanakoon is married to a Sinhala Cathelic woman named Sharmalie Fernando alias Gunawardene and despite her marriage to Gnanakoon she continues to use the Sinhala name in the passport which she claims was for convenience to get through custom formalities.

In 1991 Police raided the house of Gnanakoon’s mother in Colombo and found a suitcase full of heroin and arrested 15 Tamil boarders. The Gnanakoons claimed that the boarders were destitute Tamil girls from Jaffna and blamed that the Police raid was carried out to blacken their mother’s image.

Jayantha Gnanakoon’s wife Sharmalie in an interview with Sunday Times in July 2001, during one of her visits to Sri Lanka, disclosed many facts relating to the terrorists, the Tamils in Colombo, and Gnanakoon family relationships with the LTTE and the UNP.

She said that Jayantha Gananakoon was a pilot and had several businesses in Colombo including a shipping agency, employed mostly Tamils in his companies and also employed several hundred Tamils in Greek Ships through his known contacts. Even before her marriage she had known that he had links with the LTTE leadership.

She justified her husbands involvement with the terrorists and claimed that Sri Lankan governments had been unfair and discriminatory to Tamils. When pointed out that Tamils live happily in Colombo she said that they are Colombo Tamils and claimed that they are spared without being touched due to the fear prevalent about Prabhakaran. She also branded PLOTE, EPRLF, TULF etc, that opposes the LTTE as high class Colombo Tamils and said that her husband and majority in the LTTE does not belong to this high caste Tamils.

She defended and strongly supported child recruitment and said that children are given the choice of either going to school and get arrested and then killed by the Sri Lankan forces or to join them in their just cause. She confirmed that child recruitment had been going for the last 15 years (now amounting to 22 years) and some of the children recruited at the beginning are now grown up and over 25 years. She said that her terrorist companions are prepared to fight the war for another 50 years and that was the reason they recruit children as young as 10 years old.

As regards Eelam and international governments she said that international governments are standing by to fund Eelam and within three years of establishment of Eelam, they will have their international airlines and their own ports and that will be the end of Sinhalese and then Sinhalese will become the minority in the country.

This interview although given almost six years ago throws sufficient light on the determination and objectives of the Gnanakoons who functions not only as the international agents of the terrorists but also as the main policy makers of the outfit. It also shows that they would not confine their territorial ambitions to Northern and Easter provinces and there could be horrendous and unprecedented genocide to make the Sinhalese the minority of the country.

The conspiracies being hatched by Ranil-Gnanakoon combine is extremely dangerous in nature and proportion, and it is the responsibility of the government to give serious attention to this conspiracy and take strong and firm action against any all involved, without any sort of fear and favour..
