One of the Scouts Representing Sri Lanka from the Tamil community has left the Sri Lankan contingent in UK.

Dr. V. W. J. K. Vasanthathilaka.Consultant Rheumatologist. Teaching Hospital Kandy.

Unfortunately, one of the scouts from Sri Lankan Tamil community participated at the 21 st world scout Jamboree in the United Kingdom is missing from the Jamboree site. Usually it is this type of individuals who tarnish the good image of our nation all the time. Child of this age would not leave the site without the support of the adults and without the assistance of the relatives living in UK. Therefore this exit may have been a well organized event, planned well ahead of the selection of children.

According to all information available from reliable sources in Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom , all scouts selected to represent the nation were from children representing very good family backgrounds and they were from leading schools representing the nation. None of the scouts have had any reason to fall in to the level of seeking asylum in another country. These elements are destroying the good image of the entire nation, having selected in good faith to represent the nation by the Sri Lankan authorities, and the officials have been working day and night to make this event a complete success. They have trusted all the scouts who were selected and they have looked in to every detail of these children. Anyway, this isolated event should not overshadow the successful completion of the jamboree in Essex.

We appreciate the excellent discipline maintained by 135 other children from Sri Lanka for their extreme commitment and maintenance of high moral standards at the 21 st World Scout Jamboree held in Chelmsford, Essex in the United Kingdom. Largest group represented the Jamboree from Sri Lanka was from a leading school in Kandy, they have always maintained highest standards in education as well as in extra curricular activities. We appreciate the high standards maintained by the large majority of children. We hope the missing child would also return to Sri Lanka fairly soon respecting the Visa and immigration regulations of the United Kingdom without over staying illegally in another country. It is unjustifiable and unfair by the other children to engage in such illegal activities, that is only by one of the odd children among hundreds of other children genuinely representing our nation. There is no need to explain that, it is unacceptable to put those committed officials who looked after these children so well to be treated on this manner, obviously, the officials are also in a difficult position and helpless under these circumstances. These types of activities are against all the civilized norms of the international community. After all, children are engaged in extra curricular activities such as scouting to develop all aspects of their childhood talents and skills, to produce disciplined individuals, improve and sharpen their leadership qualities and to produce honest and trustworthy individuals for the future of the entire world.

Still there is plenty of room for this child and the relatives who were involved in this racket to rectify their mistakes and to restore the good image of the other children who were participants of this great event representing Sri Lanka as a disciplined and a respectable nation.
