Desperation Can Drive Politicians to Irrationality & Confusion

By Darmitha-Kotte

These days the news media is full of agitations, confusions, irrational utterings etc which are by no means complimentary to the agitators- the only good that has come out of it, is the fact that the entire country and the world at large have been able to see the unpatriotic true colours of these individuals. These activities have also brought about much humour to the views and readers because they can witness for themselves, how a once respected political party is now trying to grab at every straw for their survival, with the illusionary hope, that they can come into power at an election!

What we can see through all this, is how many politicians with vested interests are keen to support the LTTE terrorists and block further annihilation of the terrorists in this country. The latest "news bomb" is the information revealed by Mr. Karu Jayasuriya in parliament of the attempts made by Charles Gnanakone to bribe and buy back to the UNP, the so called UNP dissidents for a price of Rs.10million per person! This reveals a morbid aspect which we must all heed-that is, to what extent the UNP supporters are willing to go for them to achieve their hidden agendas. What is more shocking, is the fact that it is these people who cry foul about Government corruption!

In 2005 when Mr. Lakshman Kadirgamar was assassinated, the newly founded alliance of the UNP of Sripathi Sooriyarachchi and Mangala Samaraweera also had a role to play - it was Sripathie Sooriyarachchi who openly charged the UNP,Charles Gnanakone and the LTTE of the conspiracy to eliminate Mr. Kadirgamar. Today, these people all stand on one side accusing the Government of various malpractises and corruptions. We can clearly see, that when desperation takes the upper hand, politicians lose their rationality and decency. This is the level to which they degenerate. It is not only Ranil Wickramasinghe who is creating bad karma by accusing our Maha Sangha of corruption but Mr. Mangala Samaraweera under the CBK Government, made a special trip to Kataragama, to dash coconuts at one point- to curse the Maha Sangha. If anyone(especially politicians) irrespective of whether they be Buddhist, Christian, Hindu or Muslim can openly carry on campaigns to vilify the Clergy of their own faiths- then we can be quite sure, that they have absolutely no respect for the ordinary citizens of this country and therefore, we need to express our disgust and displeasure openly to these self-serving polticians who have no scruples or principles.

On no account, do we condone corruption within the Government because in our opinion, the incumbent Government came into power promising many things. They have achieved a major victory with the Thoppigala victory in the East. Now it is upto them to prove that they are equally committed to clean this society especially individuals within the rank and file of Government. That day will be victory No.2 for this Government when the entire nation will hail them as truly sincere in their aspirations towards a better Sri Lanka and free from terrorism.

We are rather intrigued by the attitude of the UNP as a party under the leadership of Ranil Wickramasinghe, taking a decision to put pressure of foreign governments who have committed to a USD500million aid programme for developing the East, not to give this money to the incumbent Government of Sri Lanka. This clearly exhibits the fact, that they do not wish for the citizens living in the East, to have a better life but would rather they suffer more and more difficulties. Are these the people who will "hopefully" return to power to bring about a better tomorrow for Sri Lankans? No doubt, just like the attempt to stop aid during the Tsunami disaster, just like the most recent attempt of Charles Gnanakone to bribe UNP dissidents, just like the conspiracy against the late Mr. Lakshman Kadirgamar, just like the character assassination campaign Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe brought against our Maha Sangha especially highly respected Monks like Venerable Ellawela Medananada Thero to which all other Nayake Theros have taken a very bleak view, we can see the horrendous low-down mentality of the UNP in their desperation. Can we be surprised that during the UNP regime of the late 1980s that over 100 Buddhist Monks "disappeared" or were "murdered" from around the country? This is revealed in a document compiled by Mr. Mangala Samaraweera who was MP for Matara at the time! The ages of these Monks ranged from 14 years to 60 years. What is the earthly value and reason to appear to be "Holy" when carrying the Dhatu Karanduwa on one's head at Buddhist ceremonies? Why not give up this hypocrisy once and for all- and proclaim that one is truly a Christian carrying on the agenda of the Christian Church? Mr. Wickramasinghe should step down and let more capable UNPers to take the party towards decency!
