AUSTRALIA’S FEDERAL POLICE ARRESTS ANOTHER LTTE KINGPIN ON TERRORISM CHARGES

By Walter Jayawardhana

Australian Federal Police joined the Victoria State Police in Australia in arresting another kingpin of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam ( LTTE) on terrorism charges.

Arumugam Sajeevan (41) was arrested in his home town Sydney July 10 and produced before Sydney Central local court police sources said.

After two arrests in May Sajeevan is the third person arrested by the Federal Police in Australia in connection with being a member of a terrorist organization , providing support or resources to a terrorist organization and making an asset available to a proscribed entity.

If all charges are proved he would face a jail term of 40 years , police sources said.
Prosecutors in the case said they wanted to extradite Sajeevan to Melbourne to face a federal court house , July 11 over his connections to the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka.

Sajeevan appeared in the Sydney Central local court where his extradition proceedings were heard before a judge.

Two other men from the same state of Victoria were arrested in May for the alleged offenses of illegally funding and providing equipment to the LTTE in Sri Lanka.

Sajeevan’s lawyer Philip Boulten told the judge that they were consenting for his client to appear before Melbourne court , July 11.

A local newspaper said Sajeevan a resident of Old Toongabbie in Sydney West who was clad in a dark suit was calm during the brief proceedings.

The newspaper reported the defense lawyer of having said that his client would comply with the extradition order and anything to facilitate the course of justice.

Meanwhile Australia’s Southern Cross Radio broadcast a statement by Australian Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty that said Sajeevan’s arrest is connected with the other two Sri lankan Tamils arrested on May 1.

"He was charged in connection with two earlier arrests in May this year to do with raising money for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the terrorist group," Mr Keelty said.
