Withstanding Western Pressure

Tissa Gunatilaka, Sydney

We have been under pressure from several parties who have a vested interest in our country. The only party who has no interest what so ever in this beautiful piece of land is 'Sinhalas'. The subtle manipulations and derogatory by interested parties are applying continuous pressure to the government of Sri Lanka in order to protect and help achieve ulterior objective of dividing this country for the purpose of destroying Sinhala Buddhist culture of which has been protected by our ancestors with their very lives.

We Sri Lankans appears so vulnerable and are dancing to the tunes of co chairs and westerners who dictate terms to us due to the fact that we have not yet understood and determined how to come out of the present situation. While military operations are successfully being executed in the east, political leaders and other interested parties coerce moderate Sinhalas to accept the solution of dividing the country or agreeing to a federal legislation that will ultimately become a stepping stone to achieve the same objective.

While all these subtle manipulations are going on Sinhalas and their political or otherwise leaders (this does not include patriotic few who are trying their best to avoid reaching the solution that co chairs and other westerners want) await to see what will be the final outcome.

We must understand why we had to undergo such pressures from co chairs and westerners. We are still depending on aids and other monitory assistance from westerners in order to maintain our day to day lives. Without these aids and assistance we have a perception that we can not survive. The perception is put into our minds by the same westerners and their Sinhala worshippers. We have been locked in to this mind set for a long time and never think beyond to see whether there is an another solution. The solution is to become self-sufficient. Of cause we can not produce everything in this country that need to support our lives, but we may be able to procure them from the producers on our terms, if we minimise or limit those products that we may require procuring from outside. In order to dictate terms we must earn a respect from other economies. We are not talking 100% self-sufficiency here but to a limit that we could earn a respectable living without depending on westerner's so called sympathy.

The self-sufficiency can not be achieved overnight but the process needs to be initiated now. And people require to be prepared for such a great outcome. The patriotic organisations and political parties have a greater roll in the process. The first step is to ensure that people understand why they have to go on this path, what will be the benefits etc. By commending what present patriotic organisations in the country such as National Patriotic Movement, JVP, JHU and individuals like Dr. Nalin De Silva, Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekara, S.L Gunasekare etc. are doing to awake Sinhalas, these organisations and patriots must prepare mind sets of moderate Sinhalas to accept the conditions if the country is turned into the process of self-sufficiency.

With the victories of our military forces that we hear every day, the day that we can stand like proud Sinhalas and dictate our terms to westerners is not far away.
