ICELAND ASSISTING SRI LANKA TO DEVELOP FISHING INDUSTRY

By Walter Jayawardhana

Iceland is assisting Sri lanka in the development of the island nation’s fishing industry , the Iceland Review reported

A team of three specialists from the The United Nations University Fisheries Training Programme in Iceland and the University of Akureyri is traveling to Sri Lanka this month.

The team will visit the Icelandic International Development Agency in Sri Lanka to estimate the need for a course on the procedure of organizing projects and project management at Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Fisheries, as Morgunbladid reports.

“We got the idea after we held a course on management and safety issues at harbors in Sri Lanka […] last autumn that was considered very successful,” said Árni Helgason, the manager of the local Development Agency.

The Sri Lanka Marine Research Institute (NARA), cooperated with the Agency on the preparation and the execution of the course last autumn, and the Iceland Fisheries Research Institute took part in the project as well.

These kinds of projects are part of increased cooperation between the Icelandic International Development Agency and The United Nations University Fisheries Training Programme in Iceland.
Those two institutions have cooperated to a considerable extent in the past. Every year students take part in the UN Training Programme in Iceland through the Development Agency.
