PRIME MINISTER OF SRI LANKA SAYS THE ARMED FORCES OF SRI LANKA ARE READY TO WIPE OUT TERRORISTS FROM NORTH

By Walter Jayawardhana

Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka said the armed forces of Sri Lanka are ready to wipe out terrorists from Sri Lanka’s Northern Province in the same manner they wiped them out in the Eastern Province of the country.

“Our valiant forces are ready to wipe out the terrorists from the Northern Province like they did it in the East,” said the Prime Minister addressing a public meeting at Horana.

A similar statement was made by the Prime Minister in the parliament while he tabled a motion to extend the emergency, a day before, seeking the approval of the parliament to extend the emergency laws mainly meant to combat the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) led separatist insurgency.
The Prime Ministers statement is an obvious reference to the LTTE who are now occupying only two districts of the Northern Province namely Kilinochchi and Mulativu. They were chased out from all their military camps they occupied in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. In the North, the Jaffna Peninsula, heartland of the Tamil North is also administered by the Sri Lanka government.
The LTTE is leading a decades old armed insurrection to install a separate state called Eelam encompassing Northern and Eastern Provinces in which more than 60,000 people have died.

The Prime Minister said many cadres of the LTTE have started surrendering to the security forces realizing the plight of the LTTE in the coming days.

Addressing the 10th annual conference of the Samurdhi Asssociation of Horana the Prime Minister said the government received a clear majority of the people at the last election to wipe out terrorism from the country and government was only implementing the people’s verdict.

He said it is better for the rest of the LTTE cadres to surrender to the government forces without leading to unnecessary killings.

He said the government was determined to hold elections, allow the people’s choice to reign in the areas taken from the terrorists and install civil administrations. The government has also given priority for the development of the Eastern Province, where no development has taken place for decades.
Breaking all agreements, he reached with the government the United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator John Holmes has made a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of a member nation the Prime Minister charged.

He said Holmes will be dealt through the proper diplomatic channels.
