How best to Celebrate freeing of East from the Terrorists ?

By Charles Perera

The fall of Toppiagala and bringing to an end terrorism in East are events worthy of celebration. But the celebrations should be more in a manner apt for the occasion. Many Officers, Soldiers, and Members of the Security Forces have given their lives heroically in the liberation of the land and the people, from the wretched, most uncouth and inhuman set of terrorists the world has ever heard of. They who died in action cannot be forgotten at this most historic occasion. There are also those poor people of the Tamil, Muslim and Sinhala Communities who went through untold suffering under the terrorists, and those who were deliberately massacred by them, and those others that died in the cross fire between the Security forces and the terrorists. They were Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, or Christians.

Therefore, in the celebration of the liberation of the East from terrorism, religious ceremonies should take priority. The most of the army Officers, and the soldiers were Sinhala Buddhists, in memory of them Buddhist Pinkam should be organised in all temples in Sri Lanka. In respect of others appropriate religious ceremonies should be organised in all Kovils, Mosques, and Churches. It would be good if the celebrations are held on one particular day in the whole Island.

The meetings with political speeches are inappropriate and therefore, it should be made an occasion for all Communities the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim in each Provincial Council Area to get together at a cultural festival to thank the Security Forces in General. The occasion should also be made to pay a tribute to the President, Commander Sarath Fonseka and all other Officers, Soldiers, and the Police men of the Security Forces who had valiantly faced the enemy, some giving their limbs , or lives.

We should also not forget that great son of Sri Lanka the Late Mr.Lakshman Kadirgamar, who drew attention of the International Community with vigour ,
bringing to their notice the necessity to end terrorism in Sri Lanka. The Government should put up a statue of Late Mr. Lakshman Kairgamar in Colombo or Kandy in memory of this great hero, who should be the symbol of Communal Unity.

It is also appropriate to inform the people of the possible danger of attacks by the terrorists. They are devils in human form. They understands only hatred and vengeance. If they form an Eelam it will be a fascist state, where elementary rights of the people will be curbed. Terrorism cannot last for ever, and the terrorists will have to pay for the crimes they have committed during the past two or three decades. We all believe either in Karma, or in a God. The God stands for what is good and not for what is bad. Those who are bad are not protected by the God. Therefore, the terrorists will be punished for their crimes by the all loving God.
Those who believe in Kamma, may believe that terrorism in Sri Lanka was a phase of unwholesome collective Kamma, and that we are seeing the end of suffering through terrorism.

There may be Tamil people who are sentimentally attached to the plan of the terrorists, the setting of an Eelam-a homeland for the Tamil people. It sounds, a great idea. But an Eelam will not settle all the problems of the Tamil people, because they may face constant conflicts with neighbouring countries, and there is also the possibility of the ambitious neighbours like the Tamil Nadu, who may want to annex the Eelam, and keep it under its rule. An Eelam Government may not be a free state. It may be like Afghanistan under Talibans.

Therefore, the sentimental attachment to the dream of a Free Tamil Eelam may turn out to be a nightmare. The best for all Communities is to learn to live together under one flag in one country, and learn to suffer together, helping each other when such needs arise, or being happy together, sharing each others happiness.

The language should not be made a barrier between the communities, all Sinhala people should be encouraged to learn Tamil, and encourage Tamils and Muslims to learn Sinhala. Inter communal marriages should be encouraged without making it imperative for partners to change religion. Each may keep his or her religion, and yet live together. These are more important than political devolution of power -Mr. Anandasangaree to note.
