and destroyed a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam ( LTTE ) train center
close to Nedunkerni from where mortar attacks have been targeted on
a Sinhalese ethnic village killing one civilian. The training Center of LTTE cadres also had heavy weapons which
were used to attack Etha Wetuna Wewa killing one and injuring four others
including an infant of two and half years old, said Brigadier
Prasad Samarasinghe . The army spokesman said the bombing target was carefully selected only
to destroy the military installation and the center was in the LTTE
controlled Mulativu District South of Nedunkerni. He also said the LTTE
maintained an armory of heavy weapons at the center. The aerial attack
occurred at 6.40 a.m.August 13. On the previous daySri Lanka Army sources said that the LTTE killed
one and injured four more civilians in an attack on a Sinhalese ethnic
village called Etha Wetuna Wewa, near Weli Oya in the besieged Northern
Province of Sri Lanka. The BBC Sinhala language service said the deceased has been identified
as B.G. Premadasa (64) who died instantly after the mortar attack. Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe , the military spokesman said the LTTE
fired two 120 mm mortars into the village and one hit a civilian house
about 7.30 a.m. August 12. A 2 years and six months old infant and the infants mother were severely
injured in the attack and admitted to the Anuradhapura Hospital. The
severe injuries and the death was caused by a mortar shell that hit
the house of H.Thilakaratne who was also injured but not so severely.
A woman on her way to the house also has been hurt. All injured are
admitted in the same hospital. Sources said the other mortar shell hit an abandoned piece of land
close to the government school of the village. Villagers said the LTTE is attacking the village as it is in the forward
Defence Line between the Sri Lanka government occupied area. They have
appealed to the army to chase out the Tamil Tigers from the adjacent
Sinhala villages they are now occupying so that the civilians could
not be targeted by the LTTE easily. They said for the last three months
there had been constant mortar attacks on the village |
