LTTE boat destroyed; three killed and similar numbers missing in clashes- Jaffna

An LTTE boat was destroyed today (13) killing at least three terrorists and wounding similar numbers, in clashes at general area Gurunagar in Jaffna, said military sources.

Military Spokesperson Brigadier Udaya Nanayakara said, LTTE elements attempting to make-way to Poonaryn area, in guise as fishermen were detected by troops on surveillance patrol in the lagoon area, at 10.50a.m.

According to military Spokesperson, Army patrol craft deployed in restricted waters off Gurunagar has detected a suspicious boat movement. Two boats separated from fishing clusters off the restricted waters and began making-way into the Poonaryn beachhead despite continuous warnings and alerts from troops.

Troops immediately retaliated when the suspicious boats directed medium range gunfire, while attempting to evade the patrol boats. Five more LTTE boats launched from Poonaryn, were also detected spearing in assistance of the suspicious LTTE movement.

Troops engaged artillery fire, destroying an LTTE boat, while the two patrol craft engaged in a fierce battle with the other four LTTE boats, said security sources.

An LTTE boat rammed itself onto a patrol craft. The crew three in numbers were reported missing, the Spokesperson further added.

Meanwhile, intercepted enemy communication revealed that two other LTTE boats were also severely damaged during heavy retaliatory attacks from troops.

Jaffna military sources said, troops effectively neutralized the LTTE boats' movement causing enemy craft to retreat with severe losses. Observation units said, few LTTE boats were also seen towed into the non-liberated Poonaryn area.

Military Spokesperson said, diving and salvage operations were launched to trace the missing soldiers and enemy wreckages.
