GOVERNMENTS CHIEF WHIP AND SENIOR MINISTER ALLEGES THE LEADER OF OPPOSITION AND GERMAN ENVOY HAD TALKS TO STOP AIDBy Walter JayawardhanaAt a press conference Sri Lanka governments senior cabinet minister
and the Chief Government Whip in parliament Jeyaraj Fernandopulle alleged
that the Ambassador for the German Federal Republic of Sri Lanka had
discussions in Colombo with the island nations main opposition party
leader about stopping European Aid to Sri Lanka as a measure of taming
the government. Fernandopulle said the German envoy Jurgen Weerth and United National
Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe held the talks in the Japanese
Restaurant of Colombos Hilton recently. The Minister said the Federal Republics ambassador for the last
so many months have been making unwelcome comments about the countrys
economy ,politics etc. The Ministers open allegation was added to the political gossip
in the country that Ranil Wickremesinghe has been misusing his position
as the Leader of Opposition to use foreign countries to weaken the government
of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and topple it by stopping foreign aid.
Fernandopulle said some members of parliament have already suggested
that a special parliamentary select committee be appointed to probe
into the activities of Ambassador Weerth to find out out whether he
has actually interfered in the internal affairs of the country. He did
not name the members who had proposed the committee. Until Weerth, the Federal Republic of Germany, has maintained extremely
friendly relations with Sri Lanka. In the past , a British High Commissioner had been declared a persona
non-grata by a former President Ranasinghe Premadasa, on charges of
interfering in the internal affairs of the country. |
