A Court Jester or a Mad Cap

By Charles Perera

There is an old Sinhala adage “ that if you look up and spit it falls on your own face”. This is exactly what Ranil Wickramasinghe is doing these days. He made all possible tricks for the Rajapakse Government to fall and for him to secure the Presidential seat for himself. He had been to see Sai Baba and came back with holy ash. He had got his horoscope read and he was assured the fall of the government last April. He went to India to win over the friendship of the Indian Prime Minister, and perhaps to have his assurance that India will not help Rajapakse. He insulted Rajapakse brothers in public accusing them of being a danger to Sri Lanka. He had also been calling the President Mahinda Rajapakse to resign.

Poor man Ranil Wickramasinghe is at his wits end not knowing how to become the President of Sri Lanka before the next Presidential election. He apparently cannot wait until the end of the mandatory period of the present President. He goes round telling people at meetings that he is coming to set
up a just and a peaceful UNP government, and stop corruption. He takes himself to be Diyasena.

His party is in shambles. SB Dissanayake confessed in Kegalle that the UNP had an agreement with Prabhakaran to give a separate administrative territory to the LTTE terrorists, through devolution. Tissa Attanayake, Ranil’s right hand man is not heard any more. But Ranil still thinks that though he is a failure as the leader of the UNP, he could yet be a better President of Sri Lanka, than the Present President.

He seems to think that the people have forgotten that he is responsible to have made the LTTE terrorists a strong military power. He provided them with a CFA, allowing them territories in the North and East completely under their control. He allowed them communication equipment, and other facilities making them an independent organisation able to administer territories under their control with their own police and law courts. He allowed them to transport heavy material bought from the Western countries with the help of the Norwegians, unchecked.

The light planes that the terrorists recently used to bomb Katunayake Air Force were probably those in the unchecked heavy material allowed to be transported to Vavunia by Ranil Wickramasinghe’s government. Ranil Wickramasinghe is responsible for the construction of the Iranamadu Air strip in the area demarcated as territory under terrorist control in the CFA signed by him without consulting the Parliament or the then President of Sri Lanka.

Such a man has no right to claim to be able to set up a just Government, in Sri Lanka. Ranil Wickramasinghe has no right to attack Rajapakse brothers as people know at least one of them escaped from an attempted assassination by the terrorists. Gotabhaya Rajapakse unlike Ranil Wickramasinghe is risking his life to free Sri Lanka from terrorism. Rajapakse brothers will defend the country in the face of the danger from the LTTE terrorists, and one can be sure that they will not sign any agreements behind the back of the people to give a separate administrative territory to LTTE terrorists, as SB Dissanayake had said that UNP had done.
