Media Apartheid against the Sri Lankan Majority

Dilrook Kannangara

This has been highlighted before but we are yet to see anything happening. In this context comments by Gotabhaya Rajapakse becomes very powerful and relevant. He aired the majority view without any fear, just as most Sri Lankan wanted him to say. A terrorist won’t become a peace ambassador just by joining the UN. This was evident when the UN peace keeping force in Congo indulged in extreme violence against the people. After all what does the UN care about the aspirations of Sri Lankans? As long as their ‘projects’ continue here they are happy. Definition of the Sri Lankan majority is the group of people who want to be called citizens of Sri Lanka. There are no ethnic majorities as can be seen from the jumbo Cabinet.

Few matters need to be resolved as a matter of urgency.

  1. Local media and journalists should serve the people, not politicians, terrorists or foreign interferers.
  2. Media men are not above the law but are very much under the law and they should always uphold the law and national interests
  3. Employment at the UN should not provide immunity to anyone to engage in anti-Sri Lankan activity.
  4. Sri Lankan media and journalists need to be governed by an authority and law enforcement should not function discriminately in favour of them.
  5. Media networks airing views, concerns and issues of the majority Sri Lankans should be developed.
  6. PTA, Public Security Ordinance, the Constitution and other relevant legal enactments should be strictly enforced against perpetrators.
  7. The Legislature should be cleansed of terrorists and separatists. JRJ had to do this and he did a marvellous job out of it. The Oath MPs everywhere in the world take to protect and promote their nation should be compelled on our MPs as well. For instance, intended marital or sexual links with the terrorist leader’s family should not cloud a legislator’s obligations towards the nation. When that happens as it was evident, he started praising his brother-in-law’s terror brigade for attacks on his own country! This is absurd.
  8. Majority Sri Lankans want the LTTE exterminated and its leaders killed; they not only want the present Defence Secretary to stay, they love him and pray for his success.
  9. Majority Sri Lankans are vehemently against disintegration of this country; they do not want to take visas to travel within their island nation. In their view if anyone aspires to live in a Tamil nation, he should look over the Palk Strait and will find it and if anyone wants a Muslim nation, he should look over the Arabian Sea and shall find it! It is as simple as that.
  10. The government should uphold their views in priority to the views of the ‘international community’. The international community cannot determine the rulers of this country (contrary to what Ranil believes).
  11. In all democracies the Majority rules and the Minority complies; this is how things should happen in Sri Lanka as well. Not the other way round as in Apartheid South Africa. Election reforms should be effected to magnify the majority rule in this country; the ridiculous executive presidency should be abolished forthwith.
  12. The view that politicians are the cause of most of Sri Lanka’s miseries is false; it fact most of our problems stem directly and indirectly from the acts of LTTE terrorists. Terrorists in this island should be handled in the same manner our free advisors handle terrorism in their lands. Lets give our children what they give their own children; not what they want our children to be given! Hypocrisy at it best.

In this context we should look at the news report that stated about an impending terror attack on the Colombo harbour. We all know that the harbour was attacked at least twice (1986 and 1998) and may be a repeat target. When such attacks occur the UNP media band demands government’s resignation (exactly what the terrorists want) without condemning the terrorist act saying that it was well known but NOTHING was done. This also helps them in another way; it takes attention away from the gruesome terrorist act. Finally they depict it as a government initiated attack!!

Another cheap gimmick by separatists was to publish survey details before elections. Centre for Policy Alternatives is in the forefront. They start from the reality (just to grab attention) then immediately before the election they publish Ranil’s UNP winning the election (this is what they want). Always their predictions go wrong!! They also have an election monitoring arm; what a joke? So much are their efforts to elect a loser.

This media Apartheid should be fought locally first; the international media will soon lose interest when their beloved newsmaker - Parabakaran is killed like a pathetic terrorist. In order to do that the killing spree of targeting terrorists should improve drastically.
