Lalkantha Sour Grapes And The Wickremasinghe Non Acceptance Of Defeat In Perspective!

Insight By Sunil Kumara For LankaWeb ~Dec.17th 2007

When KD Lalkantha of the JVP says somewhat circumspectly that" despite the (so called) rescue act, the present Government will not last " he seems to be expressing bitterness as are the rest of the opposition who were smacking their chops over a possible defeat at the Third Reading of the Budget but whose hopes have been dashed. And what rescue act may it be asked ? as the Government would have in all probabilities won the overall vote comfortably regardless of the JVP and or 'Mr Thunderman's'( distant thunder!) or Mr Band-Erring -Naike's( story of his life) vote as there is sufficient ground to believe that there was much more support for the Government due at the 11th hour to carry the vote in its favour at the Third Reading of the budget last Friday than what met the common eye!

Curiously, the same soothsayer Lalkantha of the JVP who predicted that the Mahinda Rajapaksa Government will be defeated at the Budget reading seemingly echoes the same sentiment as the leader of the opposition in saying "The President will be compelled to dissolve Parliament and call for a general election before mid 2008 " in a similar tone of voice to that of the Ranil Wickremasinghe indicative of Sour Grapes and never being able to accept defeat, so what does it make them but sore losers. Perhaps it is high time they resigned themselves to being a finished lot politically where the JVP could easily be confined to the same paddock of also rans if the mood of the Nation changes towards accommodating Mahinda Rajapaksha's SLFP as the future life blood of the Nation and the likelihood of this happenning no mere speculation.

What will it take to penetrate these numbskulls who constantly talk a lot of political shop to suit their own ends that a general election and a dissolution of parliament will only be initiated should the President so decide at a time opportune for his party and something which would shut his adversaries up for a long time. Beyond being a colossal financial extravaganza for the Nation in hindsight there may be plausible attributes towards calling a General Election at an opportune time for the Administration where most importantly it would wipe out many undesirable calling themselves Parliamentary politicians which could include the back door entry TNA who are best known as an LTTE proxy.

There is every indication that the Nation is well aware of the undercurrents being projected by the UNP/LTTE underground movement ( Jayalath Jayawardena eat your hear out!) which has aggravated the voter and all the more reason why the Rajapaksha Administration could well expect an overall majority in such a scenario leading to a snap election. To this end some of the JVP particularly the likes of the two faced Lalkantha in collaboration with the CWC (if the rhetoric of individuals such as their national convener R. Yogeswaran taken at face value ) appear to be inadvertently projecting the Rajapaksha SLFP towards a resounding victory at the next polls knowing fully well the nature of the voting majority and its true patriotic leanings.

Contrary to any speculations about 'mounting public anger and extreme displeasure ' over what Lalkantha suggests as "an unstable Government which will not be able to stand and would be compelled to go for an election" there is a huge wave of contentment within the Sinhala Nation about President Mahinda Rajapaksha's leadership capabilities and the manner he has thus far conducted himself as President.

What his opponents are attempting to broadcast to the Nation through false and misleading propaganda is mere innuendo and an expression of their own frustrations. The reference to Arumugam Thondaman not being there to 'save' the Government from impending disaster“ sounds more satirical than realistic as Thondaman's non participation in the vote was a mere indication of his duplicity where its only resultant was the resounding kick it delivered to the rear of poor Anura Bandaranike now with the predicament of nowhere substantial to turn to other than hanging onto the already shredded coat tails of his erstwhile schoolchum Ranil Wickremasinghe who is probably thinking of switching to a sackcloth or joining his sister Chandrika in self imposed exile in the UK!

It has by now become pretty obvious that the Government is not only capable of completing its full term but will do so under the auspices of a vanquished LTTE and the full backing of the Nation. The situation in the country undoubtedly has become compounded. With each passing day the terrorists are still running loose and consequently the necessary evil of maintaining a military budget towards eliminating the greater evil as the major threat posed to the Nation becomes an inevitable priority!

Consequently the escalation of the cost of living, sky rocketing inflation, the prices of essential food and other commodities soaring and the general hardships facing a Nation menaced by a terrorist threat becomes a painful reality which will ease off and the Nation will return to normal after the threat is removed. An assurance made to the Nation by the President himself and one he is perfectly capable of substantiating.

Ironically this situation has been brought about by the negligence of some of the Government's present adversaries themselves under the leader of the opposition during his tenure as Prime Minister and prior to him his beloved uncle a former President both of whom are collectively responsible for granting too much leeway and tolerance to the terrorists as their wheels of governance once rolled along a very eccentric path which the terrorists capitalised on!

Any catastrophe the Government might have faced even hypothetically seems to have passed with no ill effect now that it has received a powerful mandate to go all out to eliminate the LTTE. If the likes of Lalkantha are hoping for a dissolution of Parliament on the grounds of Governmental ineptitude as he claims it seems a nere personification of his anti governmental direction and indicative of collusion with the terrorist supportive opposition and in his own best interests perhaps learn to button his lip rather than make obstreperous statements with nothing tangible to substantiate them with beyond conjecture! Perhaps he should ape his betters within his own party in this respect who know to maintain a stiff upperlip when required albeit their own duplicities too regardless of their silence are now beginning to appear like cracks in a mirror having taken a prevaricative attitude towards the Budget's Third Vote!

Summing it all up in pragmatism as well as in wisdom the Nationalist Buddhist Political Leader of the JHU, Ven. Ellawala Medhananda Thera has said his party’s main concern was to win the war against the terrorists.

“We must forget hunger and hardships for awhile as there will be no country if we could not eradicate terrorism. Do not forget that our people survived on ‘Bajiri’ during the world wars under foreign powers. So, why can’t we do the same when we are engaged in our own war against our enemy?” the prelate emphasized in an enlightening and evocative address to the Nation.

Accepting that there was no tangible contribution on the part of politicians while aching to the public to sacrifice and be patient, Ven. Thera said,“The priority is to win the war at any cost!”

Greater words have never been said towards indicating why it is imperative that the Nation rallies behind the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksha while dispellig all the doubts and predilections towards doom expressed by his critics and antagonists for all the wrong reasons and seems merely hinged to personal agendas.
