Ranil Wickramasinghe, as the Leader of Opposition acts contrary to principles of Democracy.

By Charles Perera

A leader of the Opposition in a Democratically elected Government is an alternative President, to the one that has been elected. He is a shadow President and should show responsibility, and respect the government in power. He is not expected to be a virulent critic of the government out to destabilise the government. To defeat the government to set up another government is not the role of a Leader of the Opposition in a democratic party system . The defeating a government and putting in palace another is the role of the people in an Election. The Leader of the Opposition is therefore a constructive critic of the Government in place. The faults of the government are pointed out in Parliament, and corrective measures proposed. The people should be informed of the faults of the government at appropriate time, to justify the election of another government.

Ranil Wickramasinghe as the Leader of the Opposition does not fulfil this role, but accuses the government without sound proof of his assertions. He blares out criticisms and makes allegations which are contradictory, going on mere hearsay evidence. He says that Toppiagala captured by the Government Army is an empty jungle, and at the same time accuses the government of
having helped 800 hard core terrorists to escape from Toppiagla. He, again
accuses the President having paid 1500 million Rupees to Prabhakaran, and says the information had been given by a dissident SLFP MP who had joined his ranks. If he is more responsible he should not make that accusation himself, but should have allowed the dissident MP to declare it.

The Leader of the Opposition accuses the President of having betrayed the people, when the greatest betrayer was himself when he, as the Prime Minister signed the CFA behind the back of the people, without consulting either the Parliament, or the elected President of the Country. The people have not forgotten that, and when the time comes even those people who voted for UNP may think twice before giving their vote to Ranil Wickramsinghe in another election.

If millions of Rupees had been paid to the terrorist, to have Mr.Mahinda Rajapakse elected the President of Sri Lanka, it was well worth it when one imagines what it would have been, if people had elected Ranil Wickramasinghe the President. Sri Lanka will forever be grateful for those who paid that sum of money to the terrorist, because we have in return a remarkable President in Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse to lead the Nation.

If that money had actually been paid, Prabhakaran would have made capital of the situation, unless of course Prabhakaran has asked Wickramasinghe to be the fallguy. And if 800 hard core terrorists had been allowed to escape, that is a great human act and a rare show of compassion, which would have been an eye opener to Prabhakaran if he is a normal human being.
If the 800 hard core terrorists were not released they would have fought unto their last taking with them the lives of hundreds of Soldiers. The President then had acted wisely to saved the lives of our soldiers. Thank you Mr. President if you had a hand in that. But from the latest reports we have the terrorists on the run are pursued by the army, and some of them have been killed and other have surrendered.
