VAIKO SAYS INDIAN INTELLIGENCE
AGENCIES WERE WORKING BEHIND THE SCREEN TO BLAME LTTE FOR WRONGS DONE
AGAINST TAMIL NADU FISHERMEN
(By Walter Jayawardhana)
The leader of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) blamed
the Indian intelligence agencies for wronging the Liberation Tigers
of Tamil Eelam ( LTTE) for the kidnapping of 12 Tamil Nadu fishermen
and the murder of five more fishermen from the same state.
The Indian intelligence agencies were "working behind the
screen to put the blame on the outfit," he told reporters in Chennai.
He made the blunt statement despite 11 Kanyakumari fishermen and a Kerala
mechanic of the fishing craft called Sri Krishna have openly stated
to Indian investigators and the Kerala mechanic to the Sri Lankan investigators
that they were kidnapped and held against their wish by the LTTE.
Extensive Q branch investigations of the Tamil Nadu Police also revealed
that they killed five Tamil Nadu fishermen suspecting the fishermen
of spying on their gun running.
The fishing craft Sri Krishna was destroyed by the Maldivian authorities
while it was engaged in smuggling weapons in the Maldivian territorial
waters while 11 fishermen were held prisoners somewhere in the LTTE
held area in Sri Lanka. They were released after the ruling DMK made
a secret deal with the Tamil Tigers.
The Kerala mechanic saved his life by jumping into the sea and rescued
by the Maldivian authorities.
Blaming aimlessly and not substantiating his charges the pro-LTTE politician
said the Indian Navy and Centre were doing nothing to protect the fishermen,
and Vaiko alleged the state government committed 'betrayal' and 'treachery'
in this regard.
Vaiko avoids blaming the LTTE for the plight of the fishermen and wants
to blame the Sri Lanka Navy for it.
The Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy has alleged that Vaiko is
on the payroll of the LTTE.
Attacking the UPA government at the Centre and the DMK government in
Tamil Nadu for their "failure" to protect Sri Lankan Tamils,
MDMK chief Vaiko August 14 alleged the union government was supplying
arms to the Sri Lankan Government.
He was making the statements to the media here after appearing in a
defamation case against him. Vaiko said, "Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh has not replied to any of the letters I have sent till date highlighting
the plight of the Tamils," and termed the arms supply as "unpardonable".
He alleged the arms might be used to commit "genocidal attacks
on Tamils".
Vaiko was referring to the radars supplied to Sri Lanka by India as
a defensive measure against the bombing raids by the LTTEs nascent
air force which was dropping bombs in Colombo that also forced the countrys
only international airport closed at night.
