JVP leadership needs more maturity

Tissa Gunatilaka - Sydney 20 Nov. 2007

Now that JVP has voted with UNP and TNA against the budget that allocates record spending for country's defence to ensure complete eradication of terrorism from Sri Lanka, JVP has shown their immaturity in politics. This would negatively affect their grass root vote base. JVP may have a reason for their decision, as they always has, but at the end of the day JVP has concurred with all anti-national forces to bring down the government that do everything possible to end the present national crisis of the country. On the same token we must commend JHU and other parties along with certain individuals who supported the government's measures to bring a lasting peace to our motherland.

The four demands that JVP had put forward to the government have nothing to do with the budget. If JVP has serious intentions of steering the government in the right direction and they believes that the budget has shortfalls of the country's needs, JVP should have proposed budget amendments, not the demands that closer to the government's own position. In any logical sense no one can understand how JVP intends to make better governance or a budget for the forthcoming year by achieving those demands.

In other countries the opposition is to ensure that the country is governed with policies and principles that safeguard the country's future. By voting against the budget that intends to eradicate terrorism from our motherland JVP has shown their political immaturity.

It is unfortunate that JVP has failed to realise the need of the hour. What country needs now is a strong unwavering government that can handle all western pressure, continue with humanitarian programs in the areas rescued from clutches of evil and promote/continue defence activities in bringing peace to the people who are being suppressed by terrorists. By joining forces with western stooges in toppling the government JVP has failed to understand these needs.

As Wijedasa Rajapakse has pointed out, reducing the cabinet to 30 and cut down government spending could have been better demands than that of JVP. On the other hand increased ministerial portfolios and the increased spending are due to JVP's inability to work together and influence the government at this crucial stage of the country.

Now that we have mentioned Wijedasa Rajapakse a word need to say about his crossover. All his good works with respect to COPE would be lost if he continue to sit with people who endorsed and committed corruption while in the power. It was unfortunate that he could not negotiate most of his demands with the government without actually crossing over to the opposition. However we appreciate his non-participation to the voting unlike JVP.

We hope that JVP will learn a lesson from the budget episode and not to continue their political suicide any further.
