"Vows to Revive SWRD Policies of Democratic Socialism"-Look Whose Talking?

By Darmitha-Kotte

Our valiant soldiers are moving steadily forward, in their quest to wipe out terrorism from this country under the well coordinated strategies of our Armed Forces. At this time unless one is an avowed traitor, one would not wish to do anything which would be seen as detrimental to the country. It is not unusual for Sri Lankans to see from time to time politicians crossing over from one party to another, mostly for their personal agendas and the recent such dramatic move, is for Mangala Samaraweera and Sripathie Sooriyarachchi to cross over and sit on the side of the Opposition on the 19th of June 2007 as was reported in the news media. Undoubtedly, the UNP must think that they have won the day! The UNP had one such cross over a couple of years ago in S.B.Dissanayake decided to quit the CBK side and sit with the UNP- has it elevated the prestige of the UNP? Readers themselves can make their own judgements.

It is no secret that Mangala Samaraweera left his ailing mother and went off to London to attend the wedding of CBK's daughter which ofcourse was not the only reason for his trip- he needed to get the concurrence of his mentor who brought him into the limelight when she took controls of the SLFP-what a disaster that was? According to a news item in the "Morning Daily" of 20th June, Mangala Samaraweera is quoted to have stated:
" I am an SLFP member who shuns extremism and place my faith in middle path politics, as we adopt more extreme positions, I am directed by my conscience to sit in the Opposition as an independent SLFP member".
We are really at a loss to understand what he means by "extremism" in the above statement. The full period under which he worked was a period of extremism added together with the extremism of manipulations of State assets and misappropriations on the part of CBK-this is something that the entire country is aware of which resulted in the Supreme Court passing a judgement to put that "extremism" back on track! In his estimation, it may not be "extremism" to spend millions of Rupees merely on refurbishing one's ministerial office which he indulged in, in two ministries that he was entrusted with, for the first time in the history of our Foreign Service to employ an utterly inexperienced and immature PR Executive to the Foreign Ministry who was even provided accommodation at the fancy Crescat Apartments at State Expense where monthly rentals are charged in US dollars! The extremism with which he went around the country taking the "famous Sudu Nelum Movement" through which the Sinhalese and the Ranaviru soldiers were belittled and labeled " extremist Sinhalese" on the instructions of CBK with which they hoped to silence the patriotic forces of this country! It may be that extolling the virtues of gay rights and the X group through a friends newspaper as well as other Tabloid magazines sold near schools to corrupt innocent students cannot be considered extremism! It could well be, that there is another connotation to the word "extremism" that the general public is not aware of?

It is also reported that" The two MPs will pay their respects before the Bandaranaike Samadhi in Horagolla on Friday before launching their campaign to unite all democratic forces in this country." This is truly ironic because Mangala Samaraweera and Sripathie Sooriyarachchi are the last people who could uphold the Bandaranaike policies as we have seen through their performance during the last couple of months. Words to dupe our citizens have been used far too often and sweet sounding words have been abused most, by the children of the late SWRD and Sirimavo Bandaranaike. Party stalwarts who have stood through thick and thin in upholding the Bandaranaike policies are still very much alive and they are fully aware of how those policies have been hacked by those who broke away, formed other political parties and created wedges among party members! What these two MPs who crossed over to the Opposition on the 19th are attempting to do, is create another such drama in the hope that they can get popular support. To make it more ironic, Mangala Samaraweera has even made a statement to the effect that he welcomes CBK to join him- the very daughter who has disgraced her late parents to the hilt with her undignified manipulations at State expense! Good luck to Mr. Samaraweera and his colleague- let us see how far they will go in their latest venture? Drama, is an "art" and with Mr.Samaraweera's professional experience, we are not surprised that he wishes to use "high drama" to go down in the history of this country as yet another self-serving politician who has proved that he is not to be trusted or taken seriously. He has truly proved his loyalty to the country beyond any doubt of his patriotic feelings for our nation and the security of this country.

We do not want to cover up or condone the sins of any government but, when the country is facing a national crisis trying to combat terrorism and eliminate it, every action of politicians who attempt to demoralize the Armed Forces is deemed to be traitorous acts-this is no different! Country must come before self.
