Please wake up JVP, and rally round the President to ward off human right activists' call for a UN intervention and a Federal Constitution.

By Charles Perera

There is a lot of pressure from the Human Right activists, just when the Government Security Forces are cornering the terrorists for a final assault to end terrorisms in Sri Lanka. The International Community certainly has a secret agenda and the call for UN sanctions against human rights violation in the East and North is, it appears a means they are resorting to make the Security Forces relax their intensive attacks against the terrorists.

When one reads carefully the reports of the Human Rights activists, one would see that they have not specified any clear cases of governments violation of human rights. They are vague and general pointing out ordinary criminal acts as state violation of human rights. The Government is faced with a barrage of false accusations on all matters merely to deviate its concentrated effort to end terrorism, which for the government, is the stumbling-block for its progressive work. One cannot deny that the government despite its fight against terrorism has carried out an impressive amount of work. The economic situation, according to the latest reports, is encouraging. The World Bank has promised support for the proposed projects, which it considers will enhance rural development.

Action is being taken with regard to the kidnappings and reported disappearances of persons. Some persons who had been involved with these criminal activities have already been arrested. There is lot of work to be done, but what has been done cannot be minimised. The UNP members who crossed over to the government and who had been given Ministerial responsibilities are doing remarkably well in the respective Ministries. That is a great credit to the President who has shown his ability to work with any person what ever their political leanings.

At this very crucial period, the President should not be left alone to defend his government and the country from the local and foreign interventionists in the guise of defenders of human rights. All progressive forces in the country should back him. The JVP which had shown itself a valuable socialist partner, should at this juncture close ranks with the President and the Government, to avoid his hand being forced to accept a UN human rights Monitoring Mission. It would be in vain to criticise the President and the Government , if the worst would happen. Therefore, it is imperative that the JVP supports the government now.

A concerted effort is being made by the International Community , for unknown reasons, to divide Sri Lanka . First they tried it by "legalising" terrorism in Sri Lanka , treating terrorists equal to the government, and asking the sovereign state of Sri La nka to negotiate peace with the terrorists, when they of the International Community follows in their countries the principle that, " there is no negotiations with terrorists". Having failed with that , the International Community is using the "violation of human rights "as a means to internationalise the issue by posting a UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Sri Lanka , to finally break up Sri Lanka with a proposal for a Federal Constitution.

JVP is unfortunately being manoeuvred by its leader Amarasinghe who is a theoretician, to experiment his theory of forming a broad political front to form a government outside both UNP and SLFP. Theoreticians not being practical men are unable to understand the impracticability of the theory within a parliamentary democracy. Further more the situation in Sri Lanka is far more serious just now to experiment theories, and an election is not in the offing. And if there were to be an election , it would be a life savour for the Terrorists, who are waiting patiently, as Thamilsevam has said.

Therefore it is more practical to help the President Mahinda Rajapakse, at the present moment to keep away the efforts of the International Community with the help of the human rights activists to invite a UN Human Rrights Monitoring Mission in Sri Lanka, and force the government to accept a Federal Constitution. It would be pointless criticising the President Mahinda Rajapakse for the break up of Sri Lanka, after it has been done. It is now that all socialists should rally round the President to give him strength to fight against such an eventuality.

EU is a dangerous manipulator of small countries. Koushner is capable of breaking up States as it was done in Yugoslavi. He is also showing signs of being a war monger, with a possible demand for military intervention in Iran by the USA. Sri Lanka is a small fry for them and they may break up Sri Lanka before we will have the time to think of a solution. Unity is strength therefore this invitation to JVP to rally round the President Mahinda Rajapakse, even conditionally, until the war against terrorism is finished with.
