LTTE BOMB FOUND TEN MINUTES BEFORE IT WAS SET TO EXPLODE AT CROWDED POLA AT DELKANDA HANDIYA

By Walter Jayawardhana

Suspected Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) terrorists left a claymore type bomb disguising as an abandoned parcel in one of the most crowded places in the suburbs of Colombo aiming civilians but with public assistance the police found it and and the military defused it.

The Police blamed the Tamil Tigers to have planted it and said it contained all the hallmarks of the Tamil Tigers who started the present phase of the military escalations by planting claymore mines at Kebithigollewa killing 68 civilian bus passengers.

The Reuters news service unnecessarily attached the presence of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to the bomb but military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said the bomb had been clearly targeted at the civilians who flock to the Sunday Fair (Sunde Pola) at Delkande Junction in Nugegoda to buy groceries in the suburbs of Colombo. Nugegoda is a suburb where the middle class live. The bomb was found at 1.30 p.m. July 22.

The President went to a public meeting three miles away by helicopter and he would not have passed the bomb under any kind of circumstances, army sources said.

The Reuter correspondent wanted to draw the attention away from the the would be civilian victims if the bomb was successful and said majority of the attacks by the LTTE were targeting the military.
The report also editorialized the philosophy of the Western governments by saying “Analysts see no clear winner on the horizon and fear the war could rumble on for years.” The Reuter often preaches not to attack back when the LTTE attacks by repeating such statements.

The Ministry of Defense said, “The police made this discovery when a vigilant civilian gave information to the Mirihana Police on the presence of a suspected parcel at the Market. The Army bomb disposal team has rushed to the location and diffused the bomb averting a major bloodbath.”
"This was purely aimed at civilians as it was kept right inside the fair," Military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said.

"They had covered the bomb with plantains to hide it," he added. "Obviously it was the LTTE. They are getting desperate and want to kill as many people as possible."

The 8 kilogram bomb was turned on to explode after 10 minutes when the police found it, informed sources said.

The bomb packed with C4 plastic explosives had been fixed with a timing device, sources said
