Ranil's allegations and threats

S.Akurugoda

The opposition leader is now virtually accusing everyone and threatening every one whom he believes supporting the President Rajapaksa. He is attacking JHU monks, Rajapakasa brothers, journalists, the Commissioner of Elections, foreign banks, The Chamber of Commerce and a section of the business community are some of the apparent victims.

According to Ranil Wickramasinghe, as reported in the media, President Mahinda Rajapakse does not have a true mandate to rule the country but one obtained by a Gazette Notification published by the Commissioner of Elections, Dayananda Dissananyake,

He also has said that the Rajapaksa brothers reached an agreement with the LTTE during the last Presidential election to prevent 600,000 Tamil people from voting and it was due to that agreement that Mahinda Rajapaksa was holding the position of President. Further, according to Ranil, the sovereignty of the people was under threat today as never before.

We read about filing cases against violations of various rights and complains against bribery etc appearing, almost daily, in the local and international media reporting issues in Sri Lanka, Under such a situation, if the leader of the opposition thinks that he has a genuine case against the Commissioner of Elections and the said Gazette Notification, he has every right to take up the matter with a relevant institution and asks for redress instead of trying to please the political gallery. If he can't file an election petition due to any specific reason, he may still go to Bribery Commission or to the International Court for that matter (as many corrupted politicians do today, just to get a temporary political leverage to their existence). To this end he now has the moral support of Mangala Samaraweera, a well qualified dress designer who can 'dress-up' any case to suit.

R. Premadasa was declared duly elected President by the then Commissioner of Election Dayananda de Silva amidst complains of mast scale vote rigging and confusion. Many, both in the South and the North, could not cast their vote due to fear or intimidation. The then British High Commissioner, who was concerned about the mass rigging and misappropriation of the electoral process, was declared persona non grata by the President Premadasa. Mrs Bandaranayaike simply filed an election petition and accepted the verdict. No fuss and no threats!

The ordinary citizens who have a functional brain, unlike some of our politicians who utter similar statements to those of Ranil, do not understand the logic behind the agreement said to have been made by the Rajapaksa brothers with the LTTE, especially under the circumstances, where there is a significant reduction in the so-called LTTE control areas and their war capabilities. Remarkably, one of the Rajapaksa brothers vowed to eliminate the terrorists once and for all, and is doing a marvellous piece of work with the support of the security forces.
