The terrorists should first lay down arms, and accept a negotiated settlement.

By Charles Perera

It was sad that the terrorist attack of the Anuradhapura Air Base took away the lives of so many soldiers and the Air Force personnel. The machines could be replaced, but the loss of men is a greater cause of regret. We cannot help but feel sad also for the 21 terrorists who gave their lives to make their leader the blood thirsty Prabhakaran happy. They probably knew that it was their last sitting for a photograph with their Sun-God.

There are those who blame the army for complacency, security lapse, or enjoying a TV show, when they should be permanently alert at their posts, as the terrorists are a dare devil lot who are capable of attacking when least expected. It may also be possible that some inside mole had made it easy for the terrorists to infiltrate into the camp. Whatever it may be it is better learn once again a lesson from what had happened and request our Security Forces to keep their eyes wide open day and night under all circumstances to avoid a repetition of the sad event.

The politicians are out to profit from the situation to criticise the Government, the President, Defence Secretary, Army Commander and the rest. The foreign meddlers are equally ready, calling the President a hardliner, to interfere more into the affairs of our country and make visions of their imagined human rights violations. The Tamil websites are writing of the insanity of the Sinhala government continuing a war to deny the Tamil people a homeland.

Despite all that is being said, this should not be made a reason to blame our heroic soldiers, who are fighting a most difficult war against terrorists who fight to kill knowing that they have nothing to gain.

If the terrorists leader the Prabhakaran has a moment of relapse from his madness to kill and destroy, he would let his men live, by calling them to lay down arms, and accepting the call of the government for a negotiated settlement. Until then the Security Forces should continue to carry on the war with more determination than ever to end terrorism once and for all.
